MLB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 8/13

Mariners vs. Orioles Predictions

A cross-country series continues today as the Mariners are in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to take on the Orioles. Two very good pitchers are on the mound today, which will, of course, affect the betting, but let’s dive into it.

Trevor Rogers is quietly having a spectacular season for the O’s since his debut at the end of May. Over the course of 62.1 innings pitched, he’s allowed just 10 earned runs and 37 hits, all the while racking up 54 strikeouts and holding down a WHIP of 0.83. He should be in line for another good start, too, as the Mariners, while having good power numbers in ISO, also strikeout a lot against lefty hurlers at 24.9%. It may be home runs or bust for run production tonight against Rogers, and he’s only allowed 2 all season.

On the other side of the bump is Logan Gilbert, who hasn’t been as dominant as years past, but over his last 7 starts, he’s given up just 13 earned runs over the course of 37.2 innings pitched. The hits have been standard, but the strikeouts have been consistent, and that’s a big thing to watch as the Orioles have been above league average in K-rate and are below league average in BABIP.

It seems to me this game is heading for a pitchers' duel, and that makes the under look very appealing. Each team is capable of swinging the bat, but they haven’t been lately, and so I will trust the pitching and take the under, and in addition, take the over on Trevor Rogers' strikeouts prop.

Braves vs. Mets Predictions

Never a good sign to allow double-digit rounds to a division rival, but that’s what happened to the Braves yesterday, and now they’ll trot Carlos Carrasco on the field, and it may be a repeat of yesterday all over again!

Carrasco is now 38 years old, and it's time to hang it up, but until he does, we need to fade him hard. His ERA of 6.18 is not a fluke; it's well-earned, and he’s given up 55 hits over 43.2 innings pitched and will be looking down the barrel of the gun today against a Mets offense that is ticking upwards big time. The Mets, since the start of the month, are 6th in isolated power at .199 and have improved their BABIP to .258. The latter still isn’t great, but it's getting there, and knowing Carrasco won’t be racking up strikeouts helps the cause as well.

David Peterson will start opposite the Braves, and he’s a huge leg up in this game considering he’s been rock solid over his last 7 starts dating back to July. In 37.2 innings pitched, he’s allowed just 9 earned runs and 31 total hits with 29 strikeouts. The Braves over the past month have seen their offense shift downward as well, with their BABIP dropping and the K-rate rising to 24.8%. The Mets are going to win and win big tonight, so let’s take them on the Run Line.

In addition to a Mets win and cover, let’s attack Carrasco some more! Who else could be better to bet on right now than the polar bear Pete Alonso, who is hitting .286 with a 1.143 OPS over the past 5 games, which includes 3 home runs and 3 extra base hits! Him to go over 1.5 hits/runs/RBIs is a must bet for me today.
