MLB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 8/1

Brewers vs. Nationals Predictions

As we hit the month of August, things are really heating up in the playoff race, and with the Brewers holding just a one-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central, every game is going to count! Luckily for them, they have a series against a Nationals team that has bottomed out this summer, so let’s dive into the matchup.

Mitchell Parker will start for the home Nationals today, and that’s been bad news of late, as over his last 4 starts, his ERA is 6.04 and he’s allowed 31 hits over 22.1 innings with only 12 strikeouts. The lefty has not shown much promise, and it shouldn’t turn around today, as many of the Brewers' bats hit the southpaws well, and the team has scored 28 runs over the past 5 games.

Jose Quintana will go on the other side of things for the Brewers, and while he’s been average, he doesn’t have to rely on strikeouts to get by, and that’s great, but the Nationals do have a team K-rate of 23.9% since June 1st, which is the 8th highest in baseball. Milwaukee on the Money Line is one of the plays of the night!

Pick: Brewers Money Line (-150 on DraftKings)

Giants vs. Mets Predictions

Big time pitching matchup in this cross-country series as the Giants are in the Big Apple to take on the Mets! It’s Robbie Ray vs. David Peterson on the mound tonight, so let’s dig into the bets I like given the stats and trends.

Starting with David Peterson, he’s been the ace of the Mets staff throughout July with 4 starts and just 3 earned runs against over 25.2 innings. The strikeouts haven’t really been there for him, but he’s accustomed to working out of jams, and he’s only less than a hit per inning pitched. The Giants also aren’t threatening against lefties, usually with a 25.6% strikeout rate and just a .132 isolated power stat. I think Peterson holds things down on his end tonight, and I also like him to go over 4.5 strikeouts during the time he’s on the mound.

On the roadside of the bump, Robbie Ray will pitch for the Giants, and he’s been very consistent dating back to the start of June. 58.2 innings pitched and 23 earned runs against and 47 hits, that’s a rock-solid job right there. Ray is also a lefty, and the Mets haven’t shown as much spark against the southpaws this season with a team BABIP of .271 and an isolated power mark of just .130. Seems like with these numbers that score is going to be lower than normal, so in addition to the strikeout prop on Peterson, I will be laying down some money on the under for the game total.

Pick: David Peterson (NYM) Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-145 on DraftKings)

Pick: Giants & Mets Under 7.5 Runs (-120 on DraftKings)
