MLB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 6/9

Rays vs. Red Sox Predictions

For the new week in MLB, we kick things off with an American League East showdown between the Rays and Red Sox set to take over Boston for the next few days. Both teams are fairly evenly matched, but there is an angle or two to wager on here, so let’s dive in. 

Shane Baz will start for the Rays today, and he’s not been up to snuff this season, as in the month of May, he held an ERA of 7.26 and allowed 41 hits and 13 walks over the course of 31 innings pitched. It doesn’t look like things will get easier in June either, as he gave up a handful of runs to the slumping Rangers in his last start. This is where the Red Sox bats come into play today as they’ve won 3 of the last 4 games and did so by scoring 38 runs over that stretch; the boys are hot! With that, I see them keeping the trend rolling against Baz, and I’m taking Boston to score over their team total of 3.5 runs. 

In addition to that, I need to add a hitter that has had himself a week in Jarren Duran. Over the past 6 games, Duran is hitting .360 with an OBP of .467 and an OPS of 1.067 which has resulted in 4 doubles, a triple, and 5 runs scored. Overall on the season, the Red Sox left fielder is hitting .284 against right-handed pitching as well, so lock in Duran for a big game tonight in the hits/runs/RBIs category.

Mariners vs. Diamondbacks Predictions

Nothing like an interleague matchup for a pair of West Coast teams to start the week off right! The Mariners and Diamondbacks have both been fun teams to watch so far this season, but how will this Game 1 shake out? I am looking to attack Emerson Hancock, who is coming off a pair of nice starts against the Orioles and Nationals, but those teams aren’t in quite the same ballpark as this Arizona offense that scores 5.03 runs per game at home, the 7th highest rate in MLB this season. 

Hancock allows too many hits; that’s just the kind of pitcher he is. Overall, this season he’s allowing hitters a .289 average and .350 OBP to go with a .822 OPS, none of which are ideal for a starting pitcher. He doesn’t pitch well against either side of the plate either, but he is more susceptible to lefties, allowing a .316 average and .822 OPS. That could be bad news as the top 4 hitters in the Diamondbacks lineup are lefties or switch-hitters. I think that kind of matchup, mixed with going against Merrill Kelly, the Arizona starter tonight, is a bad one overall for Hancock and the Mariners, so give me the Diamondbacks on the Alt Run Line of -1 tonight to win this one. 

In addition, I just wrote up how much Hancock is struggling against left-handed hitting, so let’s pile on him with a player prop. Ketel Marte would be the guy to bet on as he’s been on fire since returning from injury a few weeks ago, and over the past 7 days, he’s hitting .400 with a ridiculous OPS of 1.538! That streak includes 4 homers, 8 RBIs, and 6 runs, so he should have little issue going over his hits/runs/RBIs prop tonight of 1.5!
