Twins vs. Rays Predictions: Tuesday, May 27th
Our first round of MLB picks today features an AL matchup between the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays took the series opener yesterday with a 7-2 victory. Let’s bank on the Twins responding tonight to even things up.Â
Minnesota has now lost back-to-back games for the first time since early May. The Twins went 16-2 between those instances and reeled off a 13-game winning streak. A loss on Monday is understandable since it came a day after losing in extra innings to division rival Kansas City, which capped off a hard-fought series.Â
Tonight’s starting pitching matchup gives Minnesota the edge. Twins starter Joe Ryan owns a 2.68 ERA and 0.81 WHIP this season. His 30.6% strikeout rate (90th percentile) and 3.7% walk rate (96th) are both career-best marks, while his .207 xBA (86th) is elite as well.Â
Ryan is rolling lately with a 1.50 ERA and 39:5 K:BB ratio over his last five starts. He also boasts a 2.48 ERA across five road outings this year. Ryan can handle a Rays offense that’s been league-average vs. right-handed pitching over the past two weeks (.314 wOBA, 106 wRC+).Â
On the other side, Tampa starter Taj Bradley has been very up and down this season. He has a 4.61 ERA and 4.65 FIP through 10 starts. The righty also has an underwhelming 20.3% K rate (38th percentile) with a 10.2% walk rate (30th). In four May starts, Bradley has a 4.64 ERA and 5.29 FIP with nearly as many hits allowed (18) as strikeouts (19).Â
The Minnesota offense has been tough against right-handed pitchers recently. Over the past two weeks in the split, the Twins have a .342 wOBA (10th in MLB), 122 wRC+ (6th), and .199 ISO (6th). The lineup should bounce back after being held to just three runs over the past two games combined.Â
Let’s take the Twins to win on the moneyline and lead after five innings. Ryan should anchor things early while the elite Minnesota bullpen (league-best 3.04 FIP) handles the latter frames.Â

Pirates vs. Diamondbacks Predictions: Tuesday, May 27th
Let’s now turn our attention to a late-night NL matchup. The Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a five-game skid on Monday with a 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The D-backs should make it two straight in this second game of the series.Â
Arizona owns a significant starting pitching edge at home tonight. After a shaky start to the season, Corbin Burnes has returned to ace-level form lately. The Diamondbacks’ right-hander owns a 1.69 ERA over his last six outings, with a quality start in six of his last seven appearances as well.Â
Burnes now boasts a 2.73 ERA on the year. He’s also been lights-out at home with a 1.48 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. He should take care of a Pittsburgh offense that’s struggled on the road with a .267 wOBA (29th in MLB), .206 BA (29th), and 66 wRC+ (29th). The Pirates are also weak against right-handers with a .290 wOBA (29th) and 80 wRC+ (29th).Â
Meanwhile, Pirates starter Mike Burrows could run into early trouble. He got called up last week and subsequently allowed four runs in five innings to Milwaukee. The rookie righty had a solid 2.51 ERA at Triple-A this year, but his 4.47 FIP told a different story. Burrows had a 5.26 ERA in the minors last season before making one MLB relief appearance.Â
Burrows is in the Pittsburgh rotation solely because the team needs starting pitching help. However, he might not be up for long. Pirates top prospect Bubba Chandler will likely take this rotation spot at some point. Plus, the guy Burrows replaced (Camren Mlodzinski) had a 5.67 ERA in nine starts.Â
Facing the dangerous Arizona offense on the road is a tough spot for Burrows. Against right-handers this season, the Diamondbacks boast a .352 wOBA (1st in MLB), 123 wRC+ (3rd), and .215 ISO (1st). They’re also elite at home with a .353 wOBA (2nd), 122 wRC+ (3rd), and 16.3% K rate (1st). Over the past two weeks vs. righties, the D-backs have a .363 wOBA and 130 wRC+.Â
Arizona got back on track last night with that shutout win. Let’s bank on another comfortable win tonight at home. The Pirates are just 6-20 on the road this year, with 12 road losses by 2+ runs. Take the D-backs to cover the runline for both the full game and the first five innings.Â
