Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants Predictions: Thursday, August 28th

The Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants wrap up their three-game series with an intriguing Wednesday afternoon showdown. We have a pair of talented starting pitchers on the mound as Shota Imanaga takes on Logan Webb. Let’s bank on a low-scoring matchup here. 

Webb has a solid 3.13 ERA this season for San Francisco. After some shaky starts in July, the right-hander has been much more effective over the past month. Webb owns a 2.03 ERA and 2.18 FIP over his past 5 starts coming into this one. He’s also allowed 1 or 0 earned runs in 4 of his last 5 outings. 

A home start today should benefit Webb, who owns a 2.77 ERA and 2.54 FIP at home this year. He also boasts a career 2.77 ERA when pitching in San Fran. It’s a good matchup against an inconsistent Cubs offense that’s struggled against right-handed pitching lately. Over the past two weeks vs. righties, Chicago has a .218 BA (27th in MLB), .283 wOBA (26th), and 82 wRC+ (25th). 

On the other side, Imanaga can also keep the Giants in check. He has a 3.03 ERA and 0.94 WHIP this season. The Cubs’ southpaw has been especially good lately, posting a 2.33 ERA over his past 4 starts. He’s also allowed fewer than 3 earned runs in 6 of his last 9 starts. 

Imanaga will take on a San Francisco lineup with weak numbers vs. left-handed pitching this month. Against lefties in August, the Giants have a .187 BA (29th), .263 wOBA (28th), and 69 wRC+ (25th). It’s a favorable spot for Imanaga, who’s thrown 4 straight quality starts coming in.

New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox Predictions: Thursday, August 28th

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox start up a four-game series on Thursday night. This first matchup should be a higher-scoring one with a pair of untrustworthy starting pitchers in action. Both offenses can light up the scoreboard. 

The Yankees are crushing the ball right now, putting up 33 total runs over the past 4 games (8.3 per contest). They’re also averaging 6.4 runs over the past 15 games now. This offense is surging after slumping earlier this month. 

White Sox starter Davis Martin could be in for a rough outing. The right-hander has a 4.26 ERA and 5.18 FIP over his past 6 starts since returning to the rotation in July. Additionally, his 5.36 xERA and 4.76 FIP this season suggest a potential for negative regression on his current 3.93 ERA. Meanwhile, the Yankees are hammering righties lately with a .403 wOBA and 163 wRC+ in the split over the past week. 

As the Yanks put up runs, the ChiSox can add to the total as well. Will Warren has been up and down for New York this season, with a 4.47 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. His road splits are especially worrisome. The right-hander has a 6.09 ERA and .352 wOBA allowed on the road compared to a 3.30 ERA and .293 wOBA at home. 

Warren has had some solid outings lately, but he also owns a 4.04 ERA and 4.67 FIP over his past 7 starts. That includes some shaky road appearances. The Yankees’ starter will face a White Sox offense that’s actually been tough on righties recently. Over the past week in the split, Chicago is hitting .291 (5th in MLB) with a .327 wOBA (12th) and 20.8% K rate (8th).
