MLB Best Bets for September 12

St. Louis Cardinals at Baltimore Orioles

You have to give Adam Wainwright credit for going out there every five days, doing his job, and stomaching these rough outings on a near-consistent basis at this point. After giving up six runs last start, Waino has an ugly 10.59 ERA since the start of August with 6+ runs allowed in four of his last six outings. It likely won’t get much better tonight on the road against a dangerous Baltimore Orioles offense. After putting up 11 runs last night, the O’s have now scored in double-digits in four of the past five games.  The offense also has 6+ runs scored in seven of the last nine contests.

Meanwhile, Wainwright’s road struggles are real this season. The Cardinals’ veteran right-hander has a 8.79 ERA and 7.57 FIP on the road so far and he’s coughed up at least six runs in three straight road outings. The Orioles, by the way, are smashing righties to the tune of a .376 wOBA, 143 wRC+, .222 ISO, and .303 BA over the past week. This has been a top-5 offense vs right-handers over the past month and has shown no signs of slowing down. Pencil in another ugly start for Wainwright as we fade him in multiple ways with the Orioles team total and Waino’s earned runs prop.

Pick: Baltimore Orioles Team Total Over 5.5 (-130 on DraftKings)

Pick: Adam Wainwright Over 3.5 Earned Runs (-115 on DraftKings)

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

Betting against the Atlanta Braves is obviously a risky strategy this season, but there’s value in taking the Philadelphia Phillies in the first five innings on Tuesday. These NL East rivals split a doubleheader yesterday in a pair of high-scoring games. Tonight’s matchup should feature slightly less scoring overall with Zack Wheeler and Max Fried on the mound. As for Wheeler, he’s been strong lately with a 2.60 ERA since the All-Star break and quality starts in 10 of his last 11 outings. Although he has to face a Braves offense that’s been hammering right-handed pitching all year, Wheeler could limit the damage enough. He actually boasts an impressive 1.75 ERA against the Braves over the past three seasons combined, spanning 61.2 total innings. That includes eight shutout innings against Atlanta earlier this year. It’s also encouraging to see Wheeler’s 2.93 FIP and 3.13 xERA still lower than his current 3.49 ERA.

On the other side, the Phillies offense can provide run support in the early innings to back a strong Wheeler start. The lineup has been crushing left-handed pitching over the past month with a .373 wOBA, .245 ISO, and 135 wRC+ in the split. Over the past week, the Phils haven’t slowed down vs lefties (.375 wOBA, .265 ISO, 136 wRC+). Of course, Fried is pitching well himself since returning to the Braves rotation in August. He has a 3.10 ERA over his last seven starts. Still, the Phillies are an elite offense against lefties right now and can keep pace with whatever damage the Braves will do vs Wheeler – if any.

Let’s keep the bullpens out of it and grab the Phillies in the first five innings. Plus, it’s rinse-and-repeat with Trea Turner as he’s locked in at the plate. Until it stops cashing, Turner’s props have to be considered every day at this point. The Philly shortstop hit another home run yesterday and he’s now batting .410 with a 1.456 OPS, 10 home runs, 24 RBI, and 21 runs scored over his past 15 games alone. Turner has 2+ hits+runs+RBI in 16 of his past 18 games coming into today and he’s also hitting .406 (13-for-32) against Fried over their careers.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies 1st 5 Innings ML (-104 on FanDuel)

Pick: Trea Turner Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI (-125 on BetMGM)
