MLB Best Bets and Betting Picks for August 29

Los Angeles Angels at Philadelphia Phillies – 6:40 pm ET

The Philadelphia Phillies offense continues to roll as the team stretches out a lead in the NL Wild Card standings. The Phils have won four straight and five of the last six with the offense anchoring this current hot streak. They’re averaging 7.2 runs per game over the past 11 contests with 5+ runs scored in eight of those games. Back the Phillies to keep it going offensively at home against the Los Angeles Angels. It’s Tyler Anderson starting on the mound for the Angels and he’s going through a rough patch. The left-hander has a 7.36 ERA in the month of August and a 5.61 ERA since the All-Star break. The Phillies, meanwhile, boast a .412 wOBA, .308 ISO, .990 OPS, and 163 wRC+ against left-handed pitching over the past week. This offense is also a top-10 lineup vs southpaws over the past month. Plus, Philadelphia has the best offense in baseball at home during August (.397 wOBA, 151 wRC+, .277 ISO). This is a scary matchup for any pitcher and Anderson might run into trouble.

As we’re backing the Phillies offense tonight, let’s also throw in a player prop. Trea Turner is looking like Trea Turner again with two more homers last night. It all started when he received a standing ovation from the Philly home crowd on August 4th. He went 1-for-4 with a clutch RBI single in that game and is hitting .356 with a 1.083 OPS, seven home runs, 20 RBI, and 18 runs scored in the 22 games since. He’s gone over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI in seven of the last nine games coming into tonight. Tyler Anderson has worse numbers vs righties, allowing a .285 BA, .470 SLG, and .352 wOBA in the split. Look for Turner to keep it going and anchor the Phillies offense tonight.

Pick: Philadelphia Phillies Team Total OVER 4.5 (-150 on FanDuel)

Pick: Trea Turner OVER 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI (-140 on DraftKings)

Houston Astros at Boston Red Sox – 7:10 pm ET

When J.P. France faced the Boston Red Sox last week, he got smacked around for 10 runs on 11 hits. Now the Houston Astros right-hander has to face the same lineup in back-to-back starts? The Red Sox offense should put up plenty of runs in this spot, especially with an opportunity to make up ground in the AL Wild Card race. France still has a notably higher 4.61 xERA and 4.37 FIP compared to his current 3.51 ERA – and that’s even with his most recent blowup factored in. The Astros rookie has limited the damage more often than not, but dangerous offenses have gotten to him. The Red Sox took advantage last time out. As for Boston, it’s crushing right-handed pitching to the tune of a .388 wOBA, .312 BA, .901 OPS, and 143 wRC+ over the past week. The Red Sox also don’t strike out often vs righties, which is worrisome for a pitcher like France who has a low 17.8% K rate this year. This offense is averaging 6.5 runs per game over the past 15 games with 5+ runs scored in 10 of those. Though France does boast an impressive 1.92 road ERA so far, his 3.56 FIP in away starts also suggests regression.

We’re also going to double down on this matchup and grab a Justin Turner prop. The Red Sox veteran is hitting well over the past 15 games with a .310 BA, .997 OPS, five home runs, 14 RBI, and 11 runs scored in this recent stretch. So, we’ll look at Turner to go over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI. He’s gone over this in six of his last eight games coming into tonight. J.P. France has some reverse splits with a .286 BA, .471 SLG, and .347 wOBA allowed to right-handed hitters this season. Turner is batting .313 with a .508 SLG at home and hits righties just about as well as lefties.

Pick: Boston Red Sox Team Total OVER 4.5 (-145 on DraftKings)

Pick: Justin Turner OVER 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI (-150 on BetMGM)
