Welcome back to the best stolen base picks for today. Sometimes you get all the research done, and you make a fantastic pick only to be thwarted by the baseball gods, or maybe it’s the injury bug. We had Konor Griffin for a stolen base yesterday, but word came down about an hour after the bet was made and the article was published that the young shortstop suffered a torn tendon in his middle finger and landed on the IL. We saw he was hurt the night before, but he stayed in the game and had two at-bats, one of which he hit a single, so we were at the mercy of the next-day news. Our other pick, Trea Turner, came up short. We’ll get it back today.

Pitchers Most Vulnerable to Stolen Bases Today

When hunting for successful MLB stolen base picks today, targeting the right pitcher is half the battle. The following list is made up of the day’s starting pitchers who have allowed the most stolen bases this season.

Catchers Allowing the Most Stolen Bases

The final piece of the puzzle for finding the best stolen base predictions involves looking behind the dish at catcher pop times and throwing accuracy. How many times teams attempt to steal a base on a particular catcher is a strong indicator of who we expect to see doing the most running today. The following backstops have the lowest Caught Stealing% with a minimum of 10 SB attempts against them.

Best MLB Stolen Base Picks Today:

Locking in the best stolen base predictions means finding the absolute perfect storm of a high-on-base runner and a weak battery. Here are our top two MLB stolen base picks today for Wednesday, July 8:

Favorite Bets:

CJ Abrams, Washington Nationals (+226)

You can certainly take the lower odds for MLB stolen base leader Nasim Nunez at +154, but we’ll look for a better payoff for us. Abrams has hit safely in six of his last seven games and has two stolen bases in that span. He’s posting a .386 wOBA against righties and has 12 of his stolen bases against them. Astros righty Spencer Arrighetti, who is allowing a .329 wOBA to lefthanded hitters, has allowed 15 stolen bases on the season, tied for the most allowed on today’s slate and his battery mates, either Yainer Diaz or Christian Vasquez have a combined caught-stealing rate of just 21-percent on the season. With Nunez’s speed and abilities (five hits and a steal over the last two games), we’ll take the low-hanging fruit.

Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies (+276)

We’re going right back to the well again with Turner, as this match-up is just too good to pass up, as he has hit safely in eight of his last nine games and should be aggressive on the bases given the opposing battery. We love Chase Burns, but he’s allowed 15 stolen bases on the season, also tied for the most on today’s slate, and his catchers, Tyler Stephenson in particular, have a dismal caught-stealing rate of 17.3-percent. It’s not easy to beat Burns, so I expect some aggressive running once the Phillies get on base.
