2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: The Rays probably never imagined they’d be in a position where they’d have to figure out who their everyday shortstop would be for the 2024 season but that’s exactly where they find themselves. With Taylor Walls recovering from hip surgery and likely unavailable for Opening Day, Caballero might see the bulk of playing time at short to start the season. As a 26-year-old rookie Caballero played his first 104 big league games for the Mariners last season. He was a one trick pony with a sprint speed profile in the 90th percentile and his only fantasy contribution was 26 stolen bases. He batted just .221 with a .663 OPS and with an average exit velocity of 83.3 (league average is 88.4) power is not one of his strong points.

2024 Outlook: The Rays are known for having a short leash with underperforming players so if Caballero struggles, he’ll either find himself riding the bench or back in the minor leagues and Osleivis Basabe could be given the chance to play shortstop for the Rays until Walls is fully healthy. On a positive note, Caballero did have a productive season (.333 BA, 5 HR, 15 RBI) in 21 games in the Dominican Winter League.
