Wednesday’s Quarterfinal match between Damwon Gaming and Fredit BRION went almost exactly as I predicted. We saw Canyon outmaneuver BRO and more specifically UmTI. Fredit made the crucial mistake of opting into the fights with DWG rather than looking to avoid fights they were not prepared to take. Thursday’s matchup has almost the exact keys to victory. The favorites (DRX) need to come into this matchup and play it slowly. Their greatest strength is minimizing damage in the early game and winning in a balanced approach to the team fights later. Kwangdong Freecs has the more explosive players, so they are going to be looking for opportunities to manipulate the early game through unique picks or aggressive rotations. This series has all the makings to possibly go the distance, so let’s dive in and break down these matchups!
Game #1: DRX v Kwangdong Freecs
Cann’s Pick: DRX (3-2)
Fantasy Value Breakdown
Captain- (DRX)
Favorite: Deft (DRX: $16,200) The raw individual stats definitely paints a picture that the DRX players are weaker than KDF’s players. I think looking at Deft’s kills (158) or assists (165) makes it seem like he has pretty low agency in the game. DRX is not like most teams in their approach to the game. They are slow and avoid most scrappy fights. Deft wins advantage in lane (+69 GD10, +80 XP10) through great trades and smart rotations. Deft and Beryl won’t give Teddy (KDF’s ADC) opportunities to get ahead early on. They are reserved and rarely risk their lives for flashy plays. How does this help you? He is DRX’s highest FPPG player (62.2) and is not a liability for dying constantly. Points he earns will be points he should keep and that helps you in the captain role.
Value Pick: Pyosik (DRX: $13,800)
Captain (Kwangdong Freecs)
Favorite: Teddy (KDF: $15,900) The only player I see as a must-pick-up is actually on the underdog. He has the highest kill total of any players on the slate with 161 kills and a team kill share rate of 31%. Teddy and his support (Holt) are wildly aggressive. They look for the 2v2 fight and have no problem sacrificing farm/XP to rotate earlier than their lane opponents. KDF has to have a big match out of their all-star ADC to win this matchup.
Value Pick: FATE (KDF: $15,000)
Flex (DRX)
Favorite: Pyosik (DRX: $9,200) I like this pickup here. None of the DRX players are superstar players in terms of the kill and assist numbers. Pyosik has an FPPG of 46.5 and Zeka (DRX’s mid laner) has an FPPG of 53.7. The cost difference between the two picks? Zeka is $800 more expensive and is a sub 60 FPPG player. Take the value here, focus on picking up the more kill-heavy players from KDF, and expect this series to go the distance.
Value Pick: DRX ($6,400)
Flex (Kwangdong Freecs)
Favorite: Kiin (KDF: $8,400) The largest gap I could find was between Kiin and DRX’s top laner, Kingen. Kiin has a 52.8 FPPG (nearly as much as the DRX mid laner). Kiin picked up 99 kills and 194 assists in the regular season. He, like the rest of his teammates, plays on a knife’s edge and in this matchup, you will need a high risk/high reward play to make a difference in your lineups.
Value Pick: Kwangdong Freecs ($6,200)
