CFB DFS Playbook Week 1 Saturday Night

CFB DFS Quarterbacks

Dillon Gabriel (OU) vs. KENT ($9.5K DK/$11.0K FD)

Oklahoma defeated UTEP 45-13 behind quarterback Gabriel’s 233 passing yards and three total touchdowns in Week 1. Gabriel transferred to Oklahoma this offseason from UCF, where he spent the first three years of his collegiate career and put up 8,037 yards with 70 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. There were some minor issues in the passing game last week that needs to be taken care of as OU battled protection flaws and receivers not on the same page with Gabriel. Kent State also runs an Iowa State-style of defense and the Cyclones’ defense has given the Sooners issues as of late, but Gabriel is a gunslinger and I am betting he shows up big tonight.  He should pay off his salary – but two concerns do make this more of a GPP play– the blowout factor and the high price tag.- Update- #2 pay up on DK

Anthony Richardson (UF) vs. UK ($6.8K DK/10.6K FD)

I planted my flag with Anthony Richardson last week and he sure got the job done. Now, he gets a matchup against Will Levis and Kentucky — two of the top passers in the 2023 NFL draft class. The dual-threat Richardson is coming off an awesome performance in last week’s upset win over #7 Utah as he showed off how athletic and versatile he is as well as playmaking skills. He was 24-168-0 in the air but ran for three scores on 106 yards rushing (11 attempts). His running game was undisputable because most of his runs were on broken down passes and that 45-yard dash down the left sideline was ready for primetime television. Richardson’s poise as a passer will be depended on more in Week 2 considering the strength of Kentucky's front seven but with the Heisman hype train already in full gear, Richardson is in a smash spot tonight. This is a play viable in all formats on DraftKings (DK) due to price and more of a GPP on FanDuel (FD).- Update #2 Value

Garrett Shrader (SYR) @ UCONN ($7.5K DK/$11.7K FD)

The new Robert Anae offense was as advertised this week. Shrader answered a lot of questions about his ability after his performance against Louisville last Saturday night. He was totally in charge, was accurate (completed 72% passes) and looked like a field general with over 440 total yards and that was even with a bunch of drops. What really helped in this new Anae offense was including Sean Tucker in the receiving game (UL had no answer) and also getting the tight end and middle of the field involved. If Shrader can throw like that all season and we sure know that he can run (16/95 last week) Syracuse will have one of the most dynamic offenses in the ACC. Like Richardson, Shrader is too cheap on DK and is a top overall play facing lowly UCONN but on FD, he is the most expensive quarterback of the slate making him more of a GPP play.- Update- #1 Value

Collin Schlee (KENT) @OU ($5.4K DK/$7.0K FD)

Collin Schlee has big shoes to fill as he is set to make his second collegiate start — this time against #7 Oklahoma. He is filling the vacancy left by All-MAC quarterback Dustin Crum but the intangibles are there as Schlee stands 6’3” and 220 pounds and has a powerful arm. He does exhibits some of the same qualities as Crum, even though many of his reps last season were against second string defenses, Schlee completed an impressive 71% of his throws. Most noticeable was his ability to maneuver across the field with his mobility which is a must to run the Sean Lewis “Flash Fast” offense. Schlee led all Kent State ball carriers with 47 yards on eight attempts last week and will be playing from behind tonight which means lots of possible fantasy points. Schlee may end up as one of the top point-per-dollar plays but is still GPP only on all sites.

Other Top Quarterbacks:

  • Caleb Williams, OU ($9.0K DK/$9.6K FD) - Top overall QB on FanDuel & Top payup on DK/FD
  • Will Levis, UK ($5.7K DK/$8.7K FD) - I will have some Richardson/Levis GPP QB game stacks
  • Spencer Sanders, OKST ($7.7K DK/$10.8K FD) - Nuked the slate last week (41-406-4/11-57-2)- #3 payup on DK/FD
  • Phil Jurkovec, BC ($5.3K DK/$8.1K FD)

CFB DFS Running Backs

Sean Tucker (SU) @UCONN ($9.4K DK/$11.0K FD)

The GOAT. Tucker accelerated like an elite NFL running back on that 55-yard screen pass touchdown last week and when it was all over, he just torched the Louisville defense for 184 total yards and two scores. What is really important to note is how he was included in the passing game (6 catches for 84 yards) and Louisville had no answers for it at all — so do we expect UCONN’s defense to be any better? He won’t come cheap, but Sean Tucker is the play tonight at running back.

Eric Gray (OU) vs. KENT ($6.9K DK/$8.6K FD)

A big question facing Oklahoma this season was the state of the running back room with Kennedy Brooks now a Philadelphia Eagle.  Eric Gray had a limited role last season so there were some questions as to how he would respond to being the featured back. Well, those were answered last week when he ran for 102 yards on 16 carries and 33 yards on two receptions. This looked like the player that everyone was expecting last season when he transferred from Tennessee — an elusive, big play back with the ability to make plays after contact. Gray will be one of the higher-rostered backs on the slate.

Donovan Edwards (MICH) vs. HAW ($7.2K DK)

A FD-only play here but I love the price on Donovan Edwards. In Hawaii’s first two games, they allowed 545 rushing yards alone so expect Edwards and Blake Corum ($9.2K FD) to have a field day. Last week, each played 14 snaps, Corum ran for 80 yards on 13 carries and Edwards ran for 64 on 12 carries. Pro Football Focus rated Edwards slightly higher than Corum in the run game as he had a better yards-after-contact average and was a more consistent runner. Michigan faces an extremely weak defense in Hawaii, and it is just what the doctor ordered — the Rainbow Warriors will not be able to keep up. Both runners are fully in play, but I will be taking the $2K discount on Edwards in a majority of contests.

Kavosiey Smoke (UK) @UF ($5.0K DK/$6.2k FD)

Kentucky’s running back corps is now down to two players from five. Star Chris Rodriguez will not play again as he reportedly waits on the NCAA to determine his status; Ramon Jefferson, the former FCS All-American who had a huge camp, is now out for the year with a torn ACL and now JuThan McClain is also not playing. That leaves Smoke as the top dog and La’Vell Wright as his backup. Smoke is a veteran that fought hard to earn the RB1 status in camp but had a mediocre Week 1, carrying the ball seven times for 32 yards and two receptions for 16 yards. Florida allowed 230 yards on the ground last week and 5.90 yards per carry (116th in the nation) giving more optimism for Smoke who should be a busy man tonight.

Nathan Carter (UCONN)

Nathan Carter is one of my wildcard plays this week. In the Huskies’ first two games, Carter has gone over 100 yards on the ground both times. On the road against Utah State in the opener Carter piled up 190 rushing yards on 20 carries and last week he rushed 23 times for 123 yards and a score on the ground against Central Connecticut.  The sophomore is averaging an elite 170.5 all-purpose yards per game and 7.3 yards per carry in 2022. The SU defensive line is good but young and the linebackers room took a huge with Stefon Thompson now out for the rest of the season after an injury last week. Carter may be more of a threat to the Orange this week than most observers think and will come in as a cheap and sneaky low owned GPP play on both sites.

Other Top Running Backs:

  • Tank Bigsby, AUB ($7.4K DK) - 16-147 Week 1- UPDATE #2  DK/FD
  • Blake Corum, MICH ($9.2K FD) - *see Donovan Edwards above
  • Anthony Grant, NEB ($10.0K FD) - 290 yards/4 TDs (2 games)
  • Travis Dye, USC ($8.5K DK) - 5-20 Week 1- #4 RB
  • Pat Garwo III, BC ($5.2K DK/$6.7K FD) - 14-125 Week 1- #6 RB
  • Keshawn King, VT ($5.0K DK/$7.9K FD) - 19-111-1 Week 1
  • Dominic Richardson, OKST ($5.1K DK/$7.1K FD) - 9-61-1 Week 1- #5 RB
  • Jordan Ford, TLSA ($3.0K DK) - 7-26 Week 1- #2 Value
  • Xazavian Valladay- OKST ($6.5K DK/$7.4K FD) #3 RB

CFB DFS Wide Receivers

Jordan Addison (USC) @ STAN ($9.3K DK/$9.7K FD)

Jordan Addison, who won the Biletnikoff Award last year for Pitt as the nation’s top wide receiver, has come to USC a much-hyped transfer. There was concern, though, over targets since Lincoln Riley could be a bit finicky at Oklahoma but that was put to rest last week. Addison played 26 snaps in the Rice blowout and was targeted five times (19.2%) of his total snaps. Which was pretty much the same as his target share at Pitt (17.2%) where he caught 100 passes last year. Addison is a GPP play for me tonight due to price and matchup since Stanford will probably have him lined up across from shutdown corner Kyu Blu Kelly, the son of former NFL corner Brian Kelly. Kelly is big and physical and may frustrate and smaller receiver like Addison who will try to use his dependable hands and explosiveness to get some room. Stay tuned for one of the biggest one on one matchups of the night.

Marvin Mims (OU) vs. KENT ($7.7K DK/$6.6K FD)

Marvin Mims is one of the most explosive receivers in college football. Last week we saw vintage Mims with a line of three catches for 81 yards on four targets. Kent State's defense allowed the most first downs per game (26.4) in the nation last season, and last week allowed 393 yards passing (8.9 YPA). Mims should be able to exploit this defense as the junior wide receiver is OU's best deep threat- expect a much bigger game tonight. UPDATE; #1 Overall WR

Tayvion Robinson (UK) @ UF ($5.1K DK/$7.8K FD)

Will Levis has another Robinson as his go-to receiver but this year, it’s Tayvion. Tayvion Robinson debuted with six catches for a career-high 136 yards and including 103 after the catch and Kentucky showed that it has two players that can now stretch the field- Robinson and Barion Brown (4-45 including a 100-yard kickoff return). Just like Wan’Dale Robinson was last season, the Virginia Tech transfer has quickly become a favorite target for hard throwing Kentucky QB Will Levis and the duo should be connecting often in this conference matchup with Florida. There are some nice plays in the $7K range on DK including Keylon Stokes and JuanCarlos Santana of Tulsa but I will be going right back to the well with Tayvion Robinson.

Zay Flowers (BC) @VT ($5.5K DK/$9.0K FD)

Rain is expected in this matchup between Virginia Tech and Boston College so we may see more running of the ball, but Zay Flowers will get his catches. The offense runs through Flowers and if Virginia Tech cannot find a way to limit his yards after catch, this could still turn into a classic Phil Jurkovec and Zay Flowers affair — as the QB/WR combo will be the two best players on the field.  Last week Flowers was nothing short of spectacular and it was a master performance by an elite wide receiver. Flowers continually bailed out a struggling Eagles offense and fought through tackles for extra yards and turned short routes into huge gains on his way to a 10 catch and 117-yard day with a couple of scores. Bad weather or not, expect more of the same tonight. UPDATE- #2 Overall WR

Dante Cephas (KENT) @OU ($5.6K DK/$7.1K FD)

We mentioned the Kent State “Flash Fast” offense above with their quarterback Collin Schlee. This was an explosive offense a year ago and the plan tonight is to obviously stress the Oklahoma defense tonight. If that is to happen, and Kent State will probably still be playing from behind and going to the air with Dante Cephas as the teams Alpha receiver. Last season, he was a big surprise for the Flashes, hauling in 82 receptions for 1,240 yards as he became the first Kent State receiver to go over 1,000 yards since 1997. Cephas had a solid game last week against Washington, catching six passes for 106 yards, but he did have to deal with inconsistent play from a brand-new quarterback starting his first collegiate game. Now with a game under his belt expect more from Schlee at the quarterback position which means more opportunities for Cephas. Update- #4 Overall WR

Other Top Wide Receivers:

  • Braydon Johnson, OKST ($5.0K DK/$8.5K FD) 6-133-1 Week 1
  • Keylon Stokes , TULSA ($7.6K DK) Stokes/Santana both in play - #3 WR
  • Shedrick Johnson, AUB ($6.0K DK) 4-47-0 Week 1
  • Cole Tucker, NIU ($5.7K DK) 4-67-0 Week 1
  • Devontez Walker- KENT ($3.0K) #2 Value WR
  • Trey Palmer, NEB ($7.0K FD) 12-150-0 2 Games
  • Michael Wilson, STAN ($5.3K DK/$5.8K FD) 5-8-02 Week 1- #6 WR
  • Elijah Cooks, SJSU ($3.6K DK) 6-123-0 Week 1- TOP VALUE WR
  • Mario Williams, USC ($5.4K DK/$6.2K FD) 2-43-0 Week 1
  • Ricky Pearsall, UF ($5.4K DK/$6.5K FD) 4-67-0 Week 1
  • Benjamin Yurosek, STAN ($4.3K DK/$5.6K FD) 1-1-0 Week 1 GPP
  • John Humphreys - STAN ($3.4K DK/$6.1K FD)
