The opening week of the 2026 college football season features an exciting Power Four clash in Atlanta, as Deion Sanders leads the Colorado Buffaloes against Georgia Tech on Thursday night. On the surface, the Yellow Jackets seem to have the upper hand with the advantage of playing at home, an experienced head coach in Brent Key, and a stronger defense compared to Colorado. Plus, Georgia Tech has the confidence of having defeated the Buffaloes 27-21 in last year’s opener.

However, we’re not placing too much emphasis on last year's results. Our Colorado vs. Georgia Tech predictions lean towards Colorado +6.5, and we’ll explain why.

Although Julian Lewis had limited playing time as a freshman, his potential has always been obvious. With a full offseason to prepare for the starting role and adapt to Brennan Marion's new offensive system, he has the opportunity to shine.

This transition to the "Go-Go" scheme aims to enhance tempo and challenge opposing defenses, and while it remains to be seen if Lewis is the ideal fit, his athleticism and raw talent could lead to some explosive plays for the Buffaloes.

On the other hand, Georgia Tech faces its own set of challenges with Alberto Mendoza stepping in as quarterback after transferring from Indiana. He has the tough task of succeeding Haynes King, and while Mendoza doesn't need to match King's rushing output, maintaining the offense's rhythm is crucial.

Luckily for him, Georgia Tech boasts a solid running back room, including Justice Haynes, the former Alabama and Michigan star who averaged over seven yards per carry last season, and Malachi Hosley, who did the exact same thing.

Last season, the Buffaloes struggled significantly against the run, allowing over six yards per play and more than 30 points per game. With Chris Marve stepping in as the new defensive coordinator after serving as the linebackers coach, there’s certainly optimism for improvement, but it remains to be seen what this defense will look like.

Still, while we don't expect Colorado to replicate its impressive 2023 season, the 6.5-point spread seems excessive given the uncertainties surrounding the game. The Buffaloes have bolstered their roster with notable skill-position players, including Danny Scudero, who led the nation in receiving yards at San Jose State, as they continue to build around Lewis at quarterback.

On the other hand, Georgia Tech has also added to its roster, particularly at running back and tight end, which could allow their offense to dominate time of possession and ease the pressure on Mendoza. This strategy might pose challenges for Colorado, especially if they struggle to defend against the run.

However, we believe the matchup favors the Buffs, as they don't need to excel in every aspect to cover the spread. If Lewis can effectively connect with his receivers, the Buffaloes should find ways to stay competitive. Our main concern lies in Georgia Tech's ability to exhaust Colorado's defense with their rushing game.

But, given the uncertainty around Georgia Tech's new quarterback and offensive coordinator, our Colorado vs. Georgia Tech predictions prefer to take the points with Colorado's more promising signal caller.
