Our college basketball best bets today begin with an SEC Tournament matchup between Texas and Ole Miss. Plus, we break down Georgetown vs. DePaul in the Big East Tournament. Ole Miss vs. Texas Prediction: Wednesday, 3/11

Texas is among the NCAA Tournament bubble teams that need a good showing in conference tourney week to feel good about Selection Sunday. The Longhorns should be in the bracket as of right now, but a loss in the first round of the SEC Tournament could certainly crater those chances. Let’s back them to take care of business against Ole Miss on Wednesday. 

Texas ended the regular season on a down note, losing 4 of the last 5 games. Despite the recent slump, the Longhorns have a “get-right” opportunity in their opening round SEC matchup. Ole Miss lost 12 of its last 13 games to wrap the regular season, and the Rebels went just 4-14 in league play. These teams met once in the regular season, with Texas winning 79-68.  

In this game, the Longhorns’ potent offense can set the tone for a victory. Sean Miller’s squad ranks 9th in the country in offensive efficiency this season (per KenPom) while averaging 84.4 PPG, which is 12th-most among power conference teams. It’s hard to see Ole Miss having much success defensively here. The Rebels are allowing 85.8 PPG over their past 10 games.

The Texas offense has edges in two key areas. Sean Miller’s squad gets to the free-throw line at the 3rd-highest rate in the sport while ranking 23rd nationally in offensive rebounding rate. Conversely, Ole Miss ranks 296th in the country in defensive rebounding and 309th in opposing free-throw attempts. The Longhorns can own the paint in this matchup with second-chance points while drawing plenty of fouls inside. 

On the other end, the Texas defense has admittedly struggled lately. However, it’s also had to face many of the SEC’s top offenses down the stretch. Ole Miss is not in that category. The Rebs rank 14th in the conference in offensive efficiency while averaging just 73.9 PPG over the past 14 games. 

About the only thing Ole Miss does well on offense is avoid turnovers. Besides that, the Rebels are among the bottom tier of the SEC in multiple areas. During conference play, they rank second-worst in three-point shooting, offensive rebounding, free-throw attempts, and effective field-goal percentage. Texas should be just good enough defensively to quiet this weak attack. 

Finally, let’s touch on the motivation angle for both squads. As noted above, Texas is currently sitting on the bubble and needs to avoid a one-and-done exit in the SEC Tournament. A victory over Ole Miss would set up a second-round matchup against Georgia, which provides another resume-boosting opportunity for the ‘Horns. Meanwhile, it’s fair to wonder how invested the Rebels will be in a down year for Chris Beard. 

Georgetown vs. DePaul Prediction: Wednesday, 3/11

The Big East Tournament gets underway on Wednesday with a few interesting first-round matchups. Let’s dive into one of those as DePaul takes on Georgetown. These teams split their pair of regular-season meetings, with each winning at home. How will the rubber match go in the league tourney? 

Georgetown won its last game of the regular season, but Ed Cooley’s squad has been struggling for a month now. The Hoyas previously lost 7 straight, and they’re still just 5-13 over the past 18 contests. DePaul enters the postseason on a 2-game losing streak, though it did go 4-1 in the stretch beforehand. 

Any conversation around Georgetown has to start with KJ Lewis. The Hoyas recently lost their best player to a season-ending ankle injury. It’s a very notable absence as Lewis was their offensive catalyst and top on-ball defender. Replacing his production on both ends of the floor is tough, but especially so late in the year. 

DePaul can lean on its defense to get the victory today. The Blue Demons rank 38th nationally in defensive efficiency and 36th in two-point defense. They’ve struggled to defend the three, but that’s moot in this matchup. Georgetown is shooting just 32.3% on three-pointers this year (264th in Division I). 

On the other end, DePaul admittedly leaves a lot to be desired on offense. The Demons rank last in the Big East in offensive efficiency and have struggled to score consistently all season. Yet, Georgetown enters this game having allowed nearly 80 PPG over the past month. The Hoyas’ defense also took a big hit with the Lewis injury. 

This seems like a coin flip game. However, DePaul has those slight advantages to provide value on the moneyline. Chris Holtmann’s team had also been trending in the right direction down the stretch. The Demons can build some momentum for next year by getting at least one win in the Big East Tournament.
