Duke vs. Pittsburgh Prediction: Tuesday, 2/10

Duke is coming off its second loss of the season, and first in conference play, on a buzzer-beater to rival UNC this past weekend. The Blue Devils are still 21-2 on the year and 10-1 in the ACC. Let’s count on Jon Scheyer’s squad to bounce back in a get-right spot against Pittsburgh tonight.

It’s a down year for Pitt, which is 9-15 overall and 2-9 in ACC play. The Panthers have also been handed double-digit defeats in 6 of their 9 conference losses so far. That includes some big margins against the top tier of the ACC. Pitt lost to Virginia by 20 points and to Louisville by 41. It’s suffered losses of 19 and 11 points to SMU and Clemson, respectively, over the past two weeks as well.

As for Duke, it should be plenty motivated to right the ship after losing to the Tar Heels on Saturday. Before that result, the Blue Devils won all 6 previous games by 14+ points with an average margin of victory of 21.5 PPG. They just got caught in a rivalry matchup on the road, against a surging UNC team.

Duke has also responded well in these spots. Under Scheyer, the Blue Devils are 9-1 in ACC regular-season play after suffering a conference loss. They’ve also won those games by an average margin of 16 points. Duke is also 16-2 in the regular season following any loss under Scheyer, with 10 of those wins coming by double digits.

In tonight’s matchup, specifically, Duke owns massive advantages on both ends of the court. Pittsburgh is averaging just 67 PPG in conference play without a go-to scorer on offense. The Panthers’ offense is 286th nationally in field-goal percentage and 204th in turnover rate. Plus, leading scorer Brandin Cummings is currently out indefinitely with an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Duke boasts the 3rd-best defensive efficiency in the country (per KenPom) while allowing just 63.9 PPG (9th in Division I). The Blue Devils also force turnovers at the highest rate in the ACC during conference play. Their one defensive weakness is defending the three-point line, but Pitt is shooting an ugly 29.3% from deep in league action (last in ACC).

On the other end, Duke is 8th nationally in offensive efficiency. It should score at will in the paint with one of the best two-point scoring offenses in the country. Conversely, Pitt is getting tormented inside, ranking dead last in the ACC in both two-point defense and opposing effective field-goal percentage. Cameron Boozer and Patrick Ngongba should especially dominate down low.

If you think that covering a big spread on the road will be tough for Duke, check out these stats. The Blue Devils are 10-2 ATS as double-digit road favorites since the start of last season, including 4-1 this year. They’re also 15-4 ATS on the road overall in the past 2 seasons combined. Let’s take Duke to get a big road win in this rebound spot.

Vanderbilt vs. Auburn Prediction: Tuesday, 2/10

Both Vanderbilt and Auburn will be hungry for a win tonight. The Commodores just lost at home to Oklahoma last weekend and have now dropped 4 of their last 7 games. The Tigers, meanwhile, have lost back-to-back games to Tennessee and Alabama heading into this matchup.

Instead of picking a side in this SEC showdown, let’s look at the total. Count on both offenses to be dialed in to pace a higher-scoring contest. There are key mismatches on both ends of the floor that can lead to plenty of points.

Auburn boasts the 13th-best offensive efficiency in the country, averaging 84.7 PPG this season (28th). The Tigers’ ability to score in the paint will be key in this game. Vandy ranks 12th in the SEC in two-point defense while struggling to stop teams inside. The Commodores lack size and a reliable center to man the defensive interior.

The Tigers’ offense should have success around the rim. Power forward Keyshawn Hall averages 21.0 PPG this year, scoring well inside and offering a three-point threat. Big man KeShawn Murphy will also prove to be a handful down low tonight. Plus, Vanderbilt is still dealing with the absence of senior guard Duke Miles. That takes away one of its best on-ball defenders on the perimeter.

Auburn is averaging 92.5 PPG at home this year. It can be at or above that number at home tonight. Vanderbilt recently gave up 93 and 80 points in conference road games at Arkansas and Texas, respectively. It’s also a pace-boost matchup for the Tigers, with Vandy playing at the 39th-fastest tempo in the sport.

Meanwhile, the Commodores bring in a potent offense as well. They rank 15th nationally in offensive efficiency, per KenPom, while averaging 88.9 PPG this year (11th). Auburn, on the other hand, is 253rd in the country in opposing shooting percentage. The Tigers also rank dead last in the SEC in effective field-goal percentage allowed in conference play.

Specifically, Vanderbilt’s three-point shooting will be a factor. Auburn is allowing SEC opponents to shoot a conference-worst 39.0% from three. It also ranks 280th nationally in three-point defense. The Commodores can exploit that, shooting 36.2% from deep this season. Tyler Tanner (39%) and Tyler Nickel (45%) have been especially lethal from three-point range. In addition, Vandy’s quicker pace can make this a track meet and force Auburn to play faster overall.
