Items of Note:

  • There are a lot of drivers that intend to spend a bulk of the second practice in the upper groove.
  • Joey Logano is up in the top groove immediately on the track.
  • Kevin Harvick meanwhile is going around the bottom of the track at the same time.
  • This track changes a lot throughout the race and the grooves tend to change a lot in terms of which ones are the fastest over runs.
  • Jimmie Johnson got loose on corner exit multiple times in one lap five minutes into the session.
  • Matt DiBenedetto was the first car to go below 15 seconds for a lap in this session with 10 more minutes gone in the session.
  • Martin Truex Jr. is still having trouble with his car stepping out on him in the middle of the corner.
  • Alex Bowman is having trouble keeping speed going into the corner and can’t roll through the center like he want to without getting off the gas.
  • Ryan Blaney appears to be one of the best handling cars on the track at the moment, 20 laps into the session.
  • Erik Jones did a 34-lap run and was still running very quick times even on older tires
  • The top groove is starting to come in and in Turns 3 & 4 the top groove is running within a tenth of second of what the bottom groove does at the moment, halfway through practice.
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr. tapped the wall coming off Turn 4 as he was sideways and sliding.
  • With 20 minutes left in the session, Logano has already run more than 70 laps in the session.
  • Matt Tifft is under the weather and so Chase Briscoe is running laps in the 36-car for this practice.
  • There is a load of issues for Kurt Busch in the 1-car and he used quite a lot of expletives to describe the problems with the car and said it has no magic in it.
  • Ryan Blaney blew a power steering pump with less than 10 minutes to go in the session and the team is trying to diagnose what caused the issue. He didn’t hit anything and was able to bring it to the pits without more issues.
  • Due to the red flag caused by Blaney issue, they added 12 additional minutes to the session.
  • Kevin Harvick won’t be heading back out in the added time but Joey Logano will head back out for another run with tires that have 40+ laps on them after running 100 laps in this session.
  • It was a pretty racy final 12 minutes after the red flag period with drivers working on passing each other in the separate grooves.

Items of Note:

  • PJ1 traction compound was sprayed on the bottom groove of the track this morning.
  • Numerous drivers were up on the racing surface (out of their cars) and inspecting the racing surface because the top groove of the track was brushed to remove all of the tire rubber which will take the grip out of the top groove.
  • Kyle Busch in his early laps was slowly going up to the top groove to feel it out for grip or slickness level.
  • Denny Hamlin and several other drivers going around the track in the low groove which will be the main racing groove for much of the race.
  • A few cars are having trouble sticking in the groove on the bottom with both Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin coming out of the groove in Turns 3 & 4.
  • Jimmie Johnson said he feels that there is quite a bit of things to work on on the 48-car with being a bit tight and the brakes don’t feel the way he wants.
  • William Byron says his car feel good in the PJ1 and it hooks the bottom well but it’s not as good elsewhere on the track.
  • Most cars are doing several lap runs but not terribly long runs for Bristol standards and Crew Chiefs are noticing that the fastest cars are the ones that can hook the bottom better than the others.
  • Martin Truex Jr. got very loose coming off Turn 4 and had to correct the car to keep it off the wall.
  • Erik Jones had a small moment in Turn 2 as he was kicked out of the groove when his car got a bit loose.
  • With 15 minutes left in the session, Erik Jones is the only driver to lay down a lap faster than 15 seconds and have been spending this practice making small adjustments.
  • Alex Bowman says the rear end has a pretty good chatter to it and makes it tough to turn it through the center of the corner.
  • Matt DiBenedetto is sitting third on the speed charts with 12 minutes left in the session.
  • Ryan Blaney wants his car to turn a touch better through the middle of the corner but is sitting P6 in the speed charts with 12 minutes left in the session.
  • Kyle Larson says the exit of the corner is just too slick and he thinks it’s throttle induced.
  • Daniel Suarez was pretty happy with his car this session and was working on pit road speed with 10 minutes left in the session.
  • Ryan Preece got out of the car with seven minutes left in the session after running P24 on the speed charts.
  • Kurt Busch is asking for more steering out of the left front tire because he feels that he can’t hold the bottom quite as well.
  • Late in the session there were a few cars trying to rubber up the middle groove in the corners.
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kyle Larson are the two predominant drivers that are driving up in the top groove trying to rubber it up. It’s not a shock that it’s two of the dirt track races.
  • Kyle Busch, William Byron, Brad Keselowski, and several others are joining the other two up top in the last few minutes of the session.
