For the second time this season it will be a race at a track that has been raced at once this year. Pocono! The Tricky Triangle is back for it’s second and final race of the season and yet again the same trends hold true. As mentioned the last time there was a race here, passing here is tough with the length of the track and the flatness of it, as well as the relatively small amount of laps run in the race.
At 2.5 miles per lap, it’s one of the longest tracks on the schedule, tied with Daytona and Indianapolis and just behind the 2.66 mile Talladega lap. However just because it’s long doesn’t mean there is great speed throughout the lap. During the long front stretch, longest straightaway in NASCAR, and the long “Long Pond Straightaway,” named for the lake next to it, speeds will top 200 mph throughout practice, qualifying, and the race, but speeds will slow to under 140 in the flat turns as they try and get as low of a line as possible. Each turn is different and resembles a turn from another racetrack, as an homage of sorts, with Trenton Speedway, Milwaukee Mile, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway being the muses for the banking and radii.
The last three winners have started in the top-five including Martin Truex Jr. starting P4 back in June. Overall 9-of-the-last-11 winners have started top-10 or better with two winning from starting on the pole in that span. In the field this week are five drivers with position differentials of +6 or better following June’s race here but not all of those have run each of the last four races at the track.
Any additional tidbits or comparisons you want to make can be done by looking back at the articles for the Pocono 400 that are still viewable on the site. The two practices and qualifying for this weekend’s race are all on Saturday with the practices in the morning and qualifying at 4:10 pm ET. I will have the normal coverage for you but the playbook and lineups won’t be out until after qualifying has completed since starting spots mean a lot more here than some other tracks.

Drivers To Watch This Week:
Kyle Busch: Busch was one of drivers in this section last time at Pocono and for much the same reasons, he is back here this week. A win, two top-fives, four top-10s, 188 laps led, 89 fastest laps, a 123.5 driver rating, and 95% top-15 rate are the stats in the last four races here with him winning the second race here last year. A top-priced play on both sites this week, he should be worth it once more with him producing more points in this race a year ago than he did in the June 2017 race (82.5 to 69 on DK).
Kevin Harvick: Harvick is one of only two drivers in the field with four top-fives in the last four races at Pocono puts him in a class nearly all to himself. Tallying 96 laps led and 82 fastest laps puts him second and third in those categories respectively but he does have the highest average finish of P3 of late. Going back 10 races, his 9.8 average finish, six top-fives, seven top-10s, and eight top-15s are second only to Brad Keselowski and his 186 fastest laps are best in the field. He and Busch have been battling it out for driver supremacy this year, and another showdown is in the making this week too.
Martin Truex Jr: Truex won the June race here this year to continue to make it four different winners in the last four races here. He has two top-fives, three top-10s, 83 laps led, and 85 fastest laps in that same span, however his 71% top-15 rate is well behind the 93% and 95% marks of his main competitors this year in Busch and Harvick. Over the last 15 races at Pocono he has just seven top-10s, which isn’t confidence inspiring again. Truex is a different driver the last few years, but he could have trouble replicating his win, if he doesn’t unload fast like in week’s past.
Brad Keselowski: Keselowski is the other driver who has finished in the top-five all four times since July of 2016 with 35 laps led and 43 fastest laps and a 4.3 average finish makes him second in the field in that span. Keselowski is the best driver in the field over the last 10 races, despite not having a win. He has seven top-fives, eight top-10s, and eight top-15s, 147 laps led, and 121 fastest laps. Being $9,400 and $11,000 on DK and FD respectively is a nice pseudo-discount for a guy with his history here.
Chase Elliott: Chase has been here five times in this career and finished in the top-10 in four of them including P10 in the last two races. No laps led is disappointing for a driver that knows how to get out front and lead but the 27 fastest laps in the last four is a nice addition. A 91.9 driver rating is fairly respectable as is the 83% top-15 rate. If he can keep his top-10 finishing streak going his drop in price across both sites makes him more valuable as he’s trimmed $900 off on DK since June and $600 off on FD for the second race.
