2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Louie Varland was the Twins back-to-back minor league pitcher of the year in 2021 and 2022 and he has shown flashes of being a potential front of the rotation starter for the Twins. Varland moved to the bullpen last season and thrived, pairing a 98-100 mph fastball with a devastating cutter. Making his debut as a reliever with the Twins on September 6, he went on to appear in seven relief opportunities and finished with a 1.50 ERA with an incredible 12.75 K/9 and only allowed one walk. Varland also allowed only six hits and a pair of solo home runs during that span. 

2024 Outlook: Now the big question is what will the Twins do with Varland in 2024? Will he start or relieve? As a starter, Varland had shown an ability to get outs while doing so as a fourth or fifth option in the rotation and when coming out of the bullpen, he has pushed is fastball to triple-digits.
