2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: The power developed a bit for Batten in the upper levels of the minors, but can it translate to the game's highest level? That's going to be the question. I'm fairly confident in his ability to hit for a respectable average, as that has held pretty steady throughout his time in the minors, and even last year in the bigs, he hit .258 over 139 plate appearances. His xBA tells a different story (.211), as does some of his batted ball metrics, though his ability to get the bat on the ball is solid.

2024 Outlook: With Manny Machado likely only being able to DH to begin the season, Batten figures to be a regular player for San Diego in the early going, but outside of NL-only formats, you likely won't even need to consider Batten in your drafts. He can play all over the infield for San Diego, so multi-position eligibility is likely in his future, if it's not already to begin the season, but he won't provide the prototypical power we like from corner infielders, nor the speed we like from middle infielders.
