2022 Player Outlook

Bednar was a menace on opposing batters in 2021, thanks to above-average fastball velocity, a whiff rate in the 87th percentile, and a chase rate in the 83rd percentile. In 60.2 innings last season, Bednar won three games, saved three games and recorded 77 strikeouts with a 0.97 WHIP. An unfortunate oblique injury cost him some time in September, but that doesn't take away from the fact that over his final 25.2 innings of the year, he posted a 1.05 ERA with a 35:7 K/BB ratio. Even if save opportunities are few and far between, because, you know, the Pirates stink, Bednar can still be very valuable in fantasy formats. He can rack up strikeouts with the best of them, and he posted a 2.04 ERA and 0.62 WHIP in the ninth innings last year. Being the closer for the Pittsburgh Pirates hasn't been the most lucrative in recent years, but he's their closer, so that's valuable in its own right, but the optimism here is that if Pittsburgh is leading late in the game, it certainly won't be by much.
