2022 Player Outlook

Cole Irvin is a guy that pitches to contact and doesn't generate many swings-and-misses. He posted a whiff rate in the fifth percentile, and a strikeout rate in the sixth percentile. Now, his walk rate was in the 89th percentile, and for his young career, he has a solid 5.8 percent walk rate. Irvin went 10-15 with a 4.24 ERA last year, but that 4.99 xERA, and 4.82 xFIP raise some eyebrows. Irvin will bring up the rear of the Oakland rotation, and if A.J. Puk or Brent Honeywell become healthy enough, Irvin could find himself be the odd man out. Now, he has some time before that happens, but it's something fantasy managers need to be cognizant about. Irvin is a better asset in reality compared to fantasy, as he'll eat up innings with an average at best ERA and a below average strikeout rate.
