2022 Player Outlook
Montgomery did a good job of getting ahead of hitters last season, as evidenced by his above average 66.9% first strike rate. Opposing batters were still chasing his pitches outside the strike zone at an above average rate (35.4) and his HR/9 decreased to 1.09 from 1.43. Montgomery finished the season strong, posting a 3.36 ERA in his final 13 starts of the season. His increased walk rate (2.9 from 1.8 in 2020) is troubling. Montgomery should continue to make positive strides as he moves further away from his 2018 Tommy John surgery. He should be able to take on a larger workload and pitch more innings this season. You probably won’t be targeting him in preseason fantasy drafts in shallower leagues, but he does have some marginal fantasy value in deeper fantasy leagues at this stage of his career.
