2023 Player Outlook

Overall in 2022, Montgomery was solid, posting a 3.48 ERA across a career-high 178.1 innings of work. However, he was much better after being traded to the Cardinals, as he posted a 3.11 ERA, 8.62 K/9, and 1.09 WHIP in 11 starts with the Cardinals. After the trade, he used his four-seam fastball and curveball more, at the expense of his sinking fastball. The change in his pitch mix, as well as a more pitcher-friendly environment, fueled his second-half production and has spiked his fantasy appeal for the 2023 season. If his strikeout rate remains on par with what he did once he went to St. Louis, we could see a version of Montgomery that rivals his 2021 season (3.83 ERA, 9.27 K/9) but with more wins. I expect St. Louis to continue their magic with the left-hander, and 2023 should be a productive year for Montgomery, to the tune of 10+ wins with close to a strikeout per inning and a sub-3.60 ERA.
