2022 Player Outlook
Smith is tough to read at times. He’s certainly capable of bouncing Gilbert out of the starting rotation, but he has a career 4.63 ERA and a 1.67 career HR/9. Given that in 12 starts between June and August, he had a 6.83 ERA and a 2.17 HR/9 it stands within reason the Diamondbacks will want to keep him in the bullpen where he seemed more comfortable. He has a shot at some saves, but for the most part Smith is a reliable source of strikeouts numbers heading into 2022. He did have a 2.70 ERA as a reliever, and he may get some save opportunities but don’t bank on many.
