2022 Player Outlook
McHugh shined in Tampa Bay last season, posting a 6-1 record with a 1.55 ERA, 2.12 FIP and 10.4 K/9. His 1.7 BB/9 mark was dazzling, and he turned into an absolute weapon out of the bullpen. He leaned into his new role, dropped his fastball usage and threw his slider more than half of the time last year. I’d say it panned out, as his slider posted a .177 batting average against and a 30.8 percent whiff rate. Beyond just his slider, he had three other pitches that posted a whiff rate of at least 30 percent, and while he may not be closing games for Atlanta, he’ll operate in high-leverage situations and could eventually get to some late-inning work. While he would be great in the ninth inning, Atlanta would likely use him to extinguish any fires that may occur.
