2022 Player Outlook
Gonzalez logged 143.1 innings for the Mariners in 2021, posting a 10-6 record with a 3.96 ERA (5.28 FIP) and 1.82 HR/9. Home runs really hurt the veteran southpaw last season and it likely coincides with the fact that he posted a career low ground ball rate at just 32.2 percent. Furthermore, add in an 11.4 percent barrel rate and 37 percent hard hit rate, and the jump in home runs is rather easily explained. Gonzalez will help the Seattle Mariners by eating up innings, but his batted ball profile from last season took some lumps, and if he can't contain the home runs, trouble lies ahead for Gonzalez. He doesn't strike out many batters, and his best fantasy contributions in 2022 will be adding innings to your team's ledger.
