H. Kendrick - 2B
Kendrick (hamstring) will stay back at extended spring training to open the season, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. "I trust it now but I know I'm not 100 percent. There's no point for me trying to be there for Opening Day when I know I can risk injuring myself again," the veteran said.
This was expected, as Kendrick, who has been sidelined most of March with a hamstring injury, still hasn't received clearance for game action. It's still unclear how long the veteran utility man will be sidelined; he'll complete his rehab in Florida before joining the big club. In the meantime, look for Wilmer Difo to fill in around the diamond in Kendrick's absence.

E. Stamets - SS
Stamets (hip) is starting at shortstop and batting ninth in Sunday's spring game against the White Sox.
Stamets has been battling left hip tightness since Wednesday but his relatively quick return to action confirms it was a minor issue. According to Mandy Bell of MLB.com, the 27-year-old is expected to fill in at shortstop while the newly-signed Brad Miller steps in at second base with Francisco Lindor and Jason Kipnis heading to the injured list with calf strains.

J. Hellickson - SP
Manager Dave Martinez said Hellickson will begin the season as a long-reliever, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.
The Nationals don't need a fifth starter until April 10 thanks to a few early off days, so Hellickson will open the season in a long relief role before joining Washington's rotation the second time through. The right-hander posted a 3.45 ERA and 1.07 WHIP across 91.1 innings as the team's fifth starter last season.

B. Miller - 2B
Miller signed a major-league contract with the Indians on Sunday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Miller opted out of his minor-league deal with the Dodgers on Thursday and was able to find a better opportunity with the Indians. Jason Kipnis (calf) and Francisco Lindor (calf) are both ticketed to begin the season on the injured list, so Miller should have early opportunities for playing time. The 29-year-old had 254 major-league plate appearances between the Rays and Brewers in 2018 and slashed .248/.311/.413 with seven home runs and 82 strikeouts.

J. Peterson - 2B
Peterson was reassigned to minor-league camp Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
This explains why Peterson was scratched from Sunday's spring game against the Pirates. The infielder hit .297/.435/.378 with a homer and a pair of stolen bases in 20 spring appearances. He'll operate as infield depth for the Orioles.

J. James - SP
James earned a spot in the Astros' bullpen for Opening Day, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
James lost out on his chance to make the starting rotation due to a right quad strain, and didn't make his spring debut until March 16. The 26-year-old allowed three hits and three walks while recording one strikeout over 3.1 spring innings. James figures to slot into a middle relief role for the Astros.

D. Winkler - RP
Winkler was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.
Winkler will open the season in the minors after struggling to an 8.44 ERA and 2.06 WHIP through six Grapefruit League appearances (5.1 innings). The right-hander notched a 3.43 ERA and 10.3 K/9 in 60.1 innings last season, so he should be one of the first pitchers called upon when the Braves need a fresh reliever.
Added 11:50 am (EST)
J. Jay - RF
Jay (hip) is batting leadoff and starting in right field for Sunday's Cactus League finale against the Indians, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
Jay has been hampered by a sore hip for over a week but his return to the field Sunday puts him on track for Opening Day. Manager Rick Renteria said Saturday he expected the veteran outfielder to be ready to go, which appears to be the case. The 34-year-old should provide a reliable outfield bench option for the White Sox.
