NHL DFS Picks & Playbook Today, 3/12

DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts

We have a massive 10-game slate that includes some elite players in very good matchups.  We have the usual elite players to choose from like Nathan MacKinnon and Artemi Panarin, but there is better value to focus on tonight. We also need to make sure we are picking the correct goalie because it’s going to be critical on this slate. Let’s not waste any time and get straight into the action.

NHL DFS Lineups: Best Goalies to Use

Samuel Ersson, G, Philadelphia Flyers

I don’t love Samuel Ersson tonight, but we can’t ignore the fact that the Flyers are playing the San Jose Sharks, who have won exactly six games on the road this season. Ersson is good enough to handle the terrible offence of the Sharks. He’s expensive and probably only worth considering in a GPP.

Marc-Andre Fleury, G, Minnesota Wild

It hasn’t been an easy season for the Minnesota Wild and Marc-Andre Fleury, but the veteran netminder is 7-2-0 in his last nine starts and has a great matchup at home against the Arizona Coyotes. The Wild are still capable of making the playoffs, so I expect them to come out and just push the pace of play. Fleury is worth his price tag tonight.

Tristan Jarry, G, Pittsburgh Penguins

I hate the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tristan Jarry because they should be better than what they are. Jarry has been decent, I’ll give him that, but he is getting no support from the rest of his team. Ottawa is just awful, but they do love to shoot the puck. Jarry’s $8,000 price tag on DraftKings is a hard pill to swallow, but he’s a great GPP candidate because he could hit value without having to pick up the win. It would be better if the Penguins decided to score goals and win a game, but I’m not holding my breath.

Petr Mrazek, G, Chicago Blackhawks

I know it’s hard to trust a goalie playing for the Chicago Blackhawks, but Petr Mrazek hasn’t been that bad. He is 1-6-3 in his last 10 starts, but he has a 2.62 GAA and a .920 SV% on home ice and has an elite matchup against the Anaheim Ducks. For $7,800, we could do a lot worse. There’s a ton of upside here and I’ll gladly take my chances with him in all formats.

Jacob Markstrom, G, Calgary Flames

Someone get me a paper bag because I’m going to vomit. Jacob Markstrom and the Calgary Flames have not been good this season, but we can’t ignore the matchup on paper. Colorado is elite, but they are league average in goals per game on the road and Nathan MacKinnon only has 40 points on the road this season compared to 71 at home. This could blow up in my face and I accept that, but I don’t think Colorado comes out and scores 7 goals tonight. Markstrom can be serviceable in a GPP, and he could hit value without needing the win. Just make sure you’re prepared for disappointment.

Highest Expected Goal Totals

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Magnus Chrona (3.9)

Minnesota Wild vs. Arizona Coyotes (3.9)

Colorado Avalanche vs. Jacob Markstrom (3.8)

NHL DFS Lineups: Best Skaters to Use

Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh Penguins

As bad as the Pittsburgh Penguins are, you know you’re always going to get 110% from Sidney Crosby. The Senators are bad defensively and their goaltending is even worse. We should see a ton of scoring chances in this game, so Sid had a really good chance of racking up some points.

Connor Bedard, C, Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are bad, but Connor Bedard is very good. He has three points and seven shots on goal last game against Arizona and has another great matchup on paper against Anaheim. He’s going to be on the ice a lot and you know he’s going to want to showcase his skillset. I love the value here and the upside.

Kirill Kaprizov, W, Minnesota Wild

As mentioned earlier, the Minnesota Wild have a great matchup on paper against Arizona so I’ll gladly pay up for Kirill Kaprizov. He has 13 points in the last ten games, and you know he’s going to be shooting the puck a ton tonight. He’s a great option in all formats.

Cole Caufield, W, Montreal Canadiens

Cole Caufield hasn’t scored a goal in his last ten games, but he does have six assists and is averaging over four shots per game. He’s clearly trying to score goals but the puck is not finding the back of the net. Columbus is a bad team-- allowing the 3rd most goals against per game on the road-- so look for Caufield to break out of his scoring slump tonight.

Cale Makar, D, Colorado Avalanche

Just because I’m not a massive fan of MacKinnon tonight doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore Colroado. Cale Makar does fine on the road, and we know he can shoot the puck a ton and block shots. His $8,500 price tag feels high, but his floor is high and he’s still cheaper than MacKinnon. He’s worth paying up for if you want to get some exposure to the Avalanche.

Seth Jones D, Chicago Blackhawks

Seth Jones had four assists last game against Arizona and has now finished with five shots on goal in three straight games. He’s playing a ton of minutes and is racking up points. It’s wild that DK is pricing him at $5,900 tonight, but we will stay quiet and just plug him into our lineup. There’s no reason to fade him considering how good he’s been of late.
