The Cardinals once sat where the Titans do now. A team without much winning, but with a new quarterback and, therefore, hope. The Cardinals have now had time to build their team out and they’re at the “prove it” stage of the game. The Titans are still in those early stages where you know you’ll struggle, but are just looking for signs of upside.

Maybe Cam Ward can show some upside this week if they can knock off the Arizona Cardinals on the road. The Cardinals, on the other hand, are now 2-2 and looking at some stiff competition from all three other teams in the NFC West. They can’t afford to lose this game against a team like this. Let’s dig into the narratives, injuries, and data to see if there’s a play to be made here with the sportsbooks!

Titans vs. Cardinals Predictions For NFL Week 5, Sunday 4:05 PM ET

These teams very rarely play. In fact, they have only played twice over the last decade - in 2021 and 2017. The Cardinals won both games with the most recent on being a 38-13 win. The Cardinals have actually won four of the last five meetings, though the current teams are naturally a lot different than those previous ones.

The Cardinals are now 2-2 on the year. They beat the Saints and Panthers to start off but have dropped two close division games to the 49ers and the Seahawks. The Titans have yet to win a game this season after losing to the Broncos, Rams, Colts, and Texans. Last week they were shut out 26-0.

Tennessee Titans: Slow Start For Cam Ward

One of the big problems with being a number-one overall quarterback is that the team generally has to be pretty bad (unless that pick was gifted to them like with the Panthers and the Bears). Peyton Manning joined a bad Colts team and set the rookie record for interceptions. So we have to hold back judging Cam Ward’s career by his start. When we are dissecting a weekly matchup though, his poor play has to factor in. As does the lack of weapons and the injury issues for guys like Calvin Ridley and Tyjae Spears

It hasn’t been much better on defense for Tennessee. And defense has typically been their strong suit. But they are currently a bottom-five overall team in DVOA per FTN Fantasy. They currently rank as the seventh0worst team against the pass and second-worst team against the run.

Arizona Cardinals: Building A Defense

The Arizona Cardinals dedicated a couple of years to building an offense. They grabbed Kyler Murray. They picked Trey McBride as the second tight end off the board (and made him wealthy man with an extension). They drafted Marvin Harrison Jr as the first wide receiver off the board. And they took Trey Benson as the second running back off the board. That’s a lot of investment in the offense.

This year, it was Jonathan Gannon’s turn to start building a defense. And they leaned in, using their first five picks on the defensive side. We’ve yet to see first round pick Walter Nolen but things have already trended in the right direction for the unit. And it could get better as guys get healthy.

Titans vs. Cardinals: Chig Okonkwo Over 28.5 Receiving Yards (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

I think the Cardinals win this game. But the hook on that 7.5 total is just enough for me not to bet on them. Kyler Murray has a knack for losing against tough teams and playing bad teams closer than he should in wins. We were willing to take then at 5.5 against the Panthers but 7.5 is a little rich, even at home.

The play we like in this game is kind of a deep cut. But Chig Okonkwo quietly leads this Titans team in receptions thus far. With Calvin Ridley nicked up (and not playing well in general) they are going to have to lean on guys like Okonkwo, Tyler Lockett, and Elic Ayomanor. And the Cardinals are quietly a bottom-five team in the league vs. the tight end so far.

It’s always worth mentioning the Chig Okonkwo actually runs a 4.52 forty. That’s the same 40 time as George Kittle and represents 97th-percentile speed at the position per Player Profiler. I think Okonkwo gets a few looks this week but, with speed like that, he could pick up those 28.5 yards on one play.
