Even the most reasonable football fan allows themselves delusions of their team being great at the beginning of the year. Or at least good enough to win some games. But the harsh reality starts to set in as the losses pile up. You can’t slide too far into that hole before your NFL season is lost.

The loser of this New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers game is going to walk away with a 1-3 record. That’s not the end of the world, but it certainly puts them in a hole. These aren’t the greatest teams in the world and hopes weren’t super high, but each team had aspirations of taking a step forward behind their promising young quarterbacks Bryce Young and Drake Maye. So this game has more meaning than you might think.

Panthers vs. Patriots Predictions For NFL Week 3, Sunday 4:05 PM ET

These teams play in different conferences to they very rarely meet - though they did play in the Super Bowl once upon a time. Over the last decade, they have only played once which saw a 24-6 win by New England in 2021 and a 33-30 win by Carolina in 2017. But that was all before the Bryce Young and Drake Maye era, so it’s all just history now.

Both these teams have a 1-2 record as of now. The Panthers lost their first two games to the Jaguars and Cardinals before surprising everyone with a 30-0 whooping of the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots dropped the first game to the Raiders, beat the Dolphins in Week 2, and then in Week 3, lost to the Steelers last one largely on some brutal turnovers.

Carolina Panthers: Struggling With Injuries

This summer, the Panthers decided to trade away wide receiver Adam Thielen and go with the depth they have. Since then, they lost Jalen Coker to early season IR. Xavier Legette then suffered a hamstring injury early season. And just last week, Ja’Tavion Sanders picked up an ankle sprain. All three will miss this game. On top of that, Tetairoa McMillan and Chuba Hubbard are both questionable. It’s been an injury nightmare on offense.

The defense hasn’t been a whole lot better in Carolina. Jaycee Horn has been a bright spot. But they’ve struggled against the wide receiver Horn isn’t assigned to. And they’ve also been one of the worst run defenses in football - and that dates back to last year.

New England Patriots: Dealing With Turnover Issues

Fumbles, specifically, were a massive issue last week. Rhamondre Stevenson has a well documented history of fumbling - he fumbled twice this week. Both Drake Maye and Antonio Gibson contributed fumbles of their own as well. Steelers defender Cam Heyward commented after the game that they were well aware that certain Patriots players have had ball control issues in the past and that they specifically targeted them.

On defense, the Patriots haven’t been that bad, especially upfront. Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, and Harold Landry have done a good job of creating pressure. The biggest issue has been the absence of their best defender, cornerback Christian Gonzalez. He’s been dealing with a hamstring issue but is expected to be back this week.

Panthers vs. Patriots: New England Patriots -5.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

Even if everyone were healthy, the Panthers really don’t match up well with the Patriots. Right now, the Panthers have two reliable weapons on offense - Chuba Hubbard and Tetairoa McMillan. The Patriots have a solid run defense and, assuming he makes his debut, one really good corner in Christian Gonzalez. Not only do the Panthers play right into their strengths, but both players were limited this week in practice with injuries.

On the flip side, the Patriots don’t really have a pure WR1. So they don’t have to worry about Jaycee Horn shutting him down. Their best pass-catching options are guys like Hunter Henry, Stefon Diggs, and their running backs which can easily be moved around the formation to find soft matchups.

Add in the fact that the Patriots are fairly healthy while the Panthers are riddled with injuries, and it’s really not looking good for Carolina. If you go back and examine the individual games, the Patriots could easily be 3-0 right now if not for mental mistakes. I think the Patriots take care of business this week at home and cover this spread in a win.
