NFL Week 1 Picks Against The Spread: Los Angeles Rams -5.5 (-110 at Caesars Sportsbook)
The Los Angeles Rams' season opener was a low-scoring brawl against the Houston Texans, a team that bolsters one of the most talented defenses in the league with stars at every level. Despite losing their top target, Puka Nacua, for a portion of the game to be evaluated for a concussion, along with needing to be bandaged up a bit, the Rams were able to come away with a 14-9 victory.
On the other side, the Tennessee Titans faced off against another top defense, the Denver Broncos, in rookie Cam Ward's NFL debut. While they may have been defeated 20-12, their defense was able to force four turnovers, and Cam Ward showed off his play extension ability on several occasions despite very little help on offense. I believe Ward's future is bright in the NFL, but this one is simple for me; the Titans have failed to cover in 10 of their last 12 home games, the Rams played against a much tougher defense than the Titans and still won by five, Sean McVay will outcoach Brian Callahan, and I do not see Stafford making as many mistakes as Bo Nix and the Broncos made on Sunday. With the expectation that Nacua won't miss half of the game again, I think the Rams should comfortably win this one.
NFL Week 1 Picks Against The Spread: Tampa Bay Buccaneers +2.5 (-102 at FanDuel Sportsbook)
We already discussed the slugfest that was the Rams vs. Texans game, but the Buccaneers were in a tough one as well against the Atlanta Falcons, snatching a victory from the jaws of defeat, 23-20. Baker Mayfield did not have his most efficient day, finishing with a completion percentage of just over 50%, but when it came down to it and the Bucs needed a play, he delivered.
Meanwhile, the Texans' offense looks lost, with a weak offensive line and fewer weapons on the outside. The run game was more effective than I was expecting, with Nick Chubb leading the way, but I don't think it will work as well with Vita Vea clogging the line of scrimmage.
Realistically, I think this could be another close, low-scoring game, but I trust Baker Mayfield and the Bucs offense more in these moments than C.J. Stroud and his supporting cast. I think it is incredibly unlikely that the Texans would be able to beat the Buccaneers by more than one score, barring any major injuries, let alone beat them at all. So, I love the value of getting the Bucs as +2.5 underdogs.
