NFL Week 5 Picks Straight Up: Kansas City Chiefs ML (-175 at DraftKings Sportsbook)
Am I still too low on the 3-1 Jacksonville Jaguars? Maybe a bit. Their defense looks phenomenal, and the way Liam Coen has Travis Etienne and the run game working is incredibly impressive. That being said, I am still underwhelmed by Trevor Lawrence and the passing game. Lawrence has been up and down all season, and “up and down” is not going to work against a defense that just shut down the Ravens' passing game, intercepted Lamar Jackson for the first time this season, and kept Derrick Henry under 50 rushing yards in the game.
On the other side of the ball, it feels like this Chiefs offense finally has its mojo back. Mahomes is coming off a four-touchdown game, Xavier Worthy is back from injury and immediately making his presence felt, and the Chiefs' offense is expecting to get a little bit more juice out of the backfield with Brashard Smith supposedly earning more snaps. Like I said, this Jaguars defense has looked great, but with key pieces like Travon Walker dealing with injury, I do not expect them to be able to keep up with Mahomes and KC. The Jaguars have not won a game against the Chiefs since 2009, and I do not expect that to change this weekend. Give me the Chiefs ML at pretty decent value.
NFL Week 5 Picks Straight Up: New York Giants ML (+110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
I know Malik Nabers is now out with a season-ending injury, and the Giants did not overload Jaxson Dart's plate in his first start, but let's talk about DEFENSE. This New York Giants defense took on Justin Herbert, who was the MVP frontrunner at the time, and the undefeated Chargers and held them to 18 points while forcing two interceptions. If they could do that against Jim Harbaugh's hard-nosed Chargers team, I think they could do even better against a Saints team that has yet to win a game.
I think Rattler has played fairly well, to be fair, but not well enough to make the Saints favorites in this game. The Saints were pesky against the Bills, which I expected, but the vibes are so high for the Giants even after losing their top offensive weapon. I expect Dart to be let off the leash a bit more against a middling Saints defense and help lead the Giants to another win. I love the value of the Giants as underdogs here.
