Lions vs. Chiefs Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Week 6, 10/12
This is a BIG ONE here folks. The white-hot Detroit Lions against the always dangerous Kansas City Chiefs. This one will be in Kansas City and fireworks are expected based on over/under. A fantastic choice for Sunday Night Football.
As is often the case in the middle of the NFL season, neither team will be at full strength. The Chiefs are without Rashee Rice, as we all know. And the Lions have a litany of injury issues, as you’ll see at the bottom of this article. That all needs to be factored in with our favorite predictions and picks for this game.Â

Lions vs. Chiefs Predictions For NFL Week 6, Sunday Night Football 8:20 PM ET
Teams in different conferences don’t match up all that often unless they are consistently getting to the Super Bowl (like the Chiefs and Eagles). So the Lions and Chiefs have only played one time over the last five years. That resulted in a 21-20 win by the Lions in Kansas City in early September 2023.Â
The Lions are currently sitting at 4-1 atop their division. They did drop their first game to the division rival Packers but have since rattled off four straight. The Chiefs are currently third in the AFC West but just barely as they are 2-3 and the Chargers and Broncos are both 3-2. That could be a heated battle and a win this week could go a long way for Kansas City.Â
Detroit Lions: Banged Up On DefenseÂ
The Lions' offense has been great. Sure, they lost Frank Ragnow and Taylor Decker has been battling through injuries. But Jared Goff is executing at a high level and stars like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Sam LaPorta, and Jameson Williams are making that easy. Goff hasn’t been asked to do big things, but he’s getting it down when asked - he has five end-zone throws this year and all five have been touchdowns.
This week, Goff might be asked to a lot, however. The Lions' defense is dealing with some serious injury issues. Terrion Arnold, Zach Cunningham, and Alim McNeill have already been ruled out. On top of that, both starting safeties in Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph missed every practice this week, as did Avonte Maddox. They could be missing a lot of key pieces here, especially in the secondary.Â
Kansas City Chiefs: Rare Losing Record
Sure, any team can lose a couple games early. So, there’s no reason to panic if you feel you have a good team sitting at 2-3. But it is rare for the Chiefs to have a losing record after five weeks - especially coming off a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Not having arguably their best receiver in Rashee Rice has not helped - this is the last game of his suspension before he returns.
The typically stout Chiefs defense has not had many opportunities to put up shutdown games so far with this schedule. Facing the Chargers, Eagles, and Ravens in the first three games is a tough start. They’ve been solid against the pass, but not as great against the run so far as they’ve allowed 123.4 yards per game so far on average. This is another tough assignment this week with the Lions.Â

Lions vs. Chiefs: Kansas City Chiefs -2.5Â (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
Injuries to the offensive line and defense are consistently the most under-considered parts of sports handicapping. And the injuries are not created equally when it comes to these two teams.
As you’ll see below, the Chiefs don’t have anyone on the injury report as everyone active got in full practices on Friday. Meanwhile, the Lions are reeling. They’re in danger of missing a ton of key parts of their secondary. And this is a team that relies heavily on man-to-man coverage so, if anyone at all is out, they can be susceptible to big plays.
Not to mention, Taylor Decker has been dealing with injury all season that he’s trying to manage. He even reached out to the recently retired Frank Ragnow to discuss how to play through pain in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes has shown he can still play at a high level and I’m willing to bet on the Chiefs to win by at least a field goal this week.Â
