Jaguars vs. Raiders Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Week 16, Sunday 12/22

There are some games this week that have major playoff implications, like the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Baltimore Ravens or the Minnesota Vikings against the Seattle Seahawks. This one has implications as well but not for playoffs - for the 2025 NFL Draft.
Per Tankathon’s NFL Draft order prediction model, the Raiders are currently in line for the first pick with the Jaguars in line for the fourth. The outcome of this game could jumble things up a bit there at the top. NFL teams are encouraged to always play to win but it’s certainly something we’ll need to consider when making our Jaguars vs. Raiders prediction for Week 16.

Jaguars vs. Raiders Predictions For NFL Week 16, Sunday 12/22
Despite both being AFC teams, the Jaguars and Raiders have not squared off since 2022. The Jaguars won that last meeting 27-20 but obviously those were much different teams then. I mean, both teams are currently starting different quarterbacks than they started to begin the season so these teams are a lot different from even then.
The Jaguars lost to the Jets this past weekend but beat the Titans the week before that. That win ended a five-game losing streak. The Raiders have really struggled - they have lost 10 straight. Their last win came back in September against the Cleveland Browns.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Riddled With Injuries
The Jaguars dealt with injuries to both Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne though they are now healthy. The pass game is in shambles however as they are without Trevor Lawrence, Evan Engram, Christian Kirk, and Gabe Davis. Brian Thomas has been a bright spot as he currently sits at as the WR7 in PPR fantasy football formats. Brenton Strange is doing his best to fill in for Engram while Parker Washington has been the WR2 without Christian Kirk.
The Jaguars defense has been one of the worst in the league by most metrics. In fact, FTN Fantasy currently has them ranked dead last in DVOA. They have been better against the run than the pass which is saying something considering they are still giving up 132.1 yards per game on the ground.
Las Vegas Raiders: Aiden O’Connell Returns
The quarterback position for this has been a nightmare, to say the least. Gardner Minshew started. Then he got bench for Aiden O’Connell. Then O’Connell broke his thumb so Minshew returned. A couple weeks later he was benched for Desmon Ridder. Minshew got the job back but then the following week broke his collarbone, so Ridder took over. Ridder was then benched when O’Connell returned but then O’Connell suffered a knee injury. Now O’Connell is back at practice and expected to start this week. Got all that?
There have been some bright spots on the offense - namely, rookie phenom Brock Bowers and the reliable Jakobi Meyers. Sincere McCormick also looked promising at running back but he suffered a season ending injury. It will be Alexander Mattison starting this week with Ameer Adbullah on pass downs.
The Raiders defense hasn’t been great either, but they have not been as bad as the Jaguars. They are letting up 121.2 rush yards per game, but they have been okay against the pass. They actually rank in the top 10 for fewest passing yards allowed per game. But part of that might be that they aren’t really forcing teams to have to throw the ball.

As much as fans, and possibly even owners, would like NFL teams to straight up tank, they don’t actually do that. You might shut guys down (like Maxx Crosby for the Raiders) or make trades at the deadline (like Cam Robinson for the Jaguars) but guys like Mac Jones and Aiden O’Connell are playing for future jobs in this league. Most players understand that better draft picks for the team mean that there’s a better chance that they get replaced.
The reality with both of these teams is that they’ve dealt with a lot of injury and turmoil. But the Raiders really have not been able to get anything going. Not only are they on a 10-game losing streak but they haven’t put up 20 points in five games now. They aren’t built in a way to take advantage of bad defenses and put up big scores - the offense is basically just dink and dunking it with Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers.
The Jaguars with Mac Jones, Brian Thomas, and their two backs have at least looked like a functioning offense at times. In the last three games they put up 25 on the Jets, 20 on the Texans, and actually beat the Titans. Even on the road, I’ll take the Jaguars to win this one. The moneyline doesn’t really give us a whole lot of extra juice so I’ll take the point at -115.
