Broncos vs. Bills Predictions For NFL Wildcard Sunday

The Broncos and Bills have not yet played their year. In fact, they have only played once over the last four years. That resulted in a 24-22 win by the Denver Broncos last season. Given that Bo Nix is a rookie quarterback, this will be the first time he squares off with Josh Allen.

The Bills back in late September/early October lost back-to-back games to the Ravens and Texans. After that wakeup call they went on to rattle off 12 straight wins en route to the #2 seed in the AFC.

As for the Broncos, we can’t necessarily say they “backdoored” their way into the playoffs. They lost key games to the Chargers and Bengals down the stretch then it just so happened that the Chiefs were resting their starters the final week. It’s hard to say if the Bengals might be in instead or not if the Chiefs played that one at 100%. 

 

 

 

Denver Broncos: The Bo Nix Era

Sean Payton has certainly spent some time figuring out who are his guys and who aren’t. Russell Wilson, Jerry Jeudy, Josh Reynolds, Brandon McManus - these guys are all gone. One player from the old regime in Courtland Sutton has clearly earned his keep. And Marvin Mims has recently emerged as a potential WR2 candidate. 

But it’s not as clear when it comes to the running backs or tight ends. With a solid offensive line and Bo Nix at quarterback, this team can do some damage but probably need some additional pieces to really make a run next year.

On defense is where the Broncos have really shined. They currently rank 4th in DVOA per FTN Fantasy. One player in particular has had a huge effect on matchups with opposing teams and that is Patrick Surtain. His lock down ability has neutralized some of the top opposition. 

 

 

 

Buffalo Bills: A More Balanced Approach

The Buffalo Bills actually did not have a single player named to the All Pro first team. And, given their philosophy this year, they would probably say that is just fine. 

After years of feeding 150+ targets to Stefon Diggs, they have spread the ball around this year with no player having more than 100 targets (though Khalil Shakir did have exactly 100). James Cook and Josh Allen have combined for 28 rushing touchdowns which certainly makes things easier on everyone. 

On defense the Bills have been stout - FTN Fantasy ranks them 11th in DVOA. They are also getting healthy at the right time with the return of guys like Matt Milano. They run a heavy zone, so they’ll hope to contain the Broncos pass-catchers underneath.

Josh Allen has publicly stated that the Bills didn’t want to “show too much” in games like the one against New England. And I believe him. 

Many times now the Bills have gone hard in the regular season only to lose in the playoffs. This time around they did not control their fate with Kansas City in the driver seat for the top seed. So, they did what they needed to do to win.

The interesting thing about the Bills new-look, self-less offense is that it neutralizes the best player on the Broncos defense. Patrick Surtain is a shutdown corner, but the Bills don’t have a premiere WR. 

He doesn’t go into the slot much (827 snaps out wide, only 77 in the slot) so he’s not going to go in there and cover Khalil Shakir. Taking away one of Amari Cooper, Keon Coleman, or Mack Hollins doesn’t move the need much. 

In the playoffs, I don’t expect the Bills to hold anything back. And, as promising as the future is for the Denver Broncos with Bo Nix and Sean Payton, they are simply no match right now for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. 

Even though it’s a big spread on this one, I don’t expect the Broncos to keep this one competitive. And, after the heartbreak the Bills have gone through, I don’t think they’ll be taking any chance.
