Caleb Williams & Bears’ Offense Struggles
Once again, the Chicago Bears were crowned offseason champions after snagging their new head coach Ben Johnson from the rival Detroit Lions and filling out their roster with exciting players both in free agency and the NFL Draft. Unfortunately, despite Johnson being considered an offensive mastermind, things do not seem to be clicking right away for second-year quarterback Caleb Williams and the rest of the Bears’ offense.
After two straight practices where the offense had more lowlights than highlights, including Johnson pulling the first team offense off the field due to multiple mistakes, it was expected that the Bears would be making strides in the right direction. Unfortunately, that was not the case, as Williams started off his 7-on-7 period with back-to-back interceptions. Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is not too concerned about the early struggles:
Colts Quarterback Battle Update
Yesterday, a main focus of our NFL Training Camp Updates was the Cleveland Browns quarterback battle, but today takes us to Indianapolis in the battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. Richardson severely struggled both in terms of injuries and performance on the field since he entered the league in 2023. As a result, the Indianapolis Colts decided to bring in competition in the quarterback room through veteran Daniel Jones, who might already have a leg up in the competition. While the two quarterbacks have been splitting first-team reps, today Jones was the first one under center in the 11-on-11 period.
Despite Jones getting the first snaps, though, Richardson reportedly had a great day of practice, connecting several times with rookie tight end Tyler Warren, who also had his best day of practice thus far.
Travis Hunter with the Defense
Rookie Travis Hunter, who has been considered a “unicorn” since he played both sides of the ball in college, spent most of the offseason with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense in order to help him learn the playbook and develop as a receiver. This carried on into training camp, where he spent the first two practices on the offensive side of the ball. Today, Hunter finally made the switch, confirming that he will be playing both on offense and defense for the Jaguars.
Giants Offense Explodes
A positive NFL Training Camp Update about the New York Giants? Impossible, right? Well, it seems like Chef Russ was cooking today with second-year star receiver Malik Nabers:
It wasn’t just the first team offense that was on fire, though. Both Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo had great days of practice, connecting on this pass here:
NFL Training Camp Injury Report & Transactions: Christian Wilkins Released
On top of all of our NFL Training Camp Updates on the field, plenty of news happened off the field as well. Check out our NFL Training Camp Injury Report & Transactions:
Christian Wilkins Released
In one of the more shocking news stories within the NFL Training Camp Transaction Update, the Las Vegas Raiders released star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins yesterday after their NFL training camp practice. Wilkins, who was made the highest-paid non-quarterback free agent of the 2024 free agency cycle, only played five games with the Raiders before his season ended due to a foot injury. Unfortunately, Wilkins' injury continued to linger into this year’s NFL training camp, and after disagreements on how the injury should be handled and days of deliberation from head coach Pete Carroll, the team decided it was best if they moved on. Wilkins has already seen interest from multiple teams, including the New England Patriots.
Justin Jefferson Injury Update
Possibly the biggest news of the NFL Training Camp Injury Report, Justin Jefferson is dealing with a mild left hamstring strain that the team intends to be cautious with, according to head coach Kevin O’Connell. Despite Jefferson dealing with hamstring issues in the past, that was with his right leg. While Jefferson will miss some practices, Coach O’Connell has no doubt that he will be back in time for their Week One matchup against the Chicago Bears.
Jordan Hicks and Justin Pugh Retire
Two longtime NFL players announced their retirements today: Jordan Hicks and Justin Pugh. Jordan Hicks is a ten-year vet who most recently started 12 games for the Cleveland Browns last season. Justin Pugh was drafted by the New York Giants in 2013, spending six of his 11 seasons with the team, playing both on the interior of the offensive line and at tackle. Despite not taking a snap since 2023, he is officially retiring as a New York Giant today.
Chuck Clark Signed
The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in more reinforcements in the secondary after trading away safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Dolphins. Former Jets and Ravens safety Chuck Clark officially will make his return to the AFC North on a one-year deal with the Steelers.
Justin Fields Injury Update
After a scare yesterday that left Jets fans ready to call it quits on the season, Justin Fields was seen back on the practice field today. Despite his dislocated toe leaving him considered day-to-day, it is a welcome sight by many to see Fields back on the field, only one day removed from yesterday’s injury.
It is also worth mentioning that edge rusher Jermaine Johnson has been cleared from his Achilles injury that left him sidelined for most of his 2024 season.
Savion Williams and Aaron Banks Injury Update
Two new Green Bay Packers were unable to suit up for practice today. Free agent signee Aaron Banks is considered day-to-day with a back injury, while rookie wide receiver Savion Williams had to sit out of practice due to a concussion.
Other Notable Injury Updates
- Brock Purdy: Purdy missed practice due to “personal reasons.” Should not be a concern moving forward.
- Jerome Ford: Ford is still dealing with an undisclosed injury, but could return to practice soon, according to Head Coach Kevin Stefanski.
- Terence Steele: OT Terence Steele suffered a high ankle sprain at practice today and will miss a few days of training camp as a result.
- Derrick Barnes & Terrion Arnold: Both Lions defenders missed practice today due to their injuries from yesterday, but are both expected to return to practice tomorrow.
- Patrick Mekari: OL Patrick Mekari is currently dealing with back spasms, but should be okay moving forward, according to head coach Liam Coen.
- Aaron Brewer: C Aaron Brewer has missed the first few days of practice due to a soft tissue injury. He is expected to make his return soon, though, according to head coach Mike McDaniel.
- Jalin Hyatt: Hyatt is expected to miss tomorrow’s practice after experiencing cramping and tightness in his lower body from today’s training camp practice.
