With 11 games on tonight’s DFS NBA slate, some of the note-worthy players that will be inactive tonight include LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Khris Middleton, Collin Sexton and Michael Porter Jr. and Nikola Vucevic. The Cavs are still missing a few players and the Pistons just lost Kelly Olynyk for the next month and a half. We’re awaiting the fates of Brandon Ingram and Deandre Ayton heading into tonight’s action. Here’s tonight’s Starting-5.
PG: De’Aaron Fox: The pace might be working against the Kings, but Fox has been shooting the ball better and he’s scored at least 21 actual points in 3 of his last 4 games. He’s shot over 46 percent in three of his last five contests and we’ve seen him take at least 19 field goals in 3 straight outings. Fox gets the most time with the ball and he’s even dished 6.2 dimes per outing. He grabs 3.8 boards and 1.5 steals per game as well on the defensive end. Speaking of defense, Fox is coming off of back-to-back three-block games. He’s giving investors a little bit of everything and with the Thunder bordering the bottom 10 in the league in defense versus point guards, let’s give Fox a whirl. He’s shooting better, producing consistently in four categories and he’s under 8k on FanDuel and $8400 on DraftKings. There are eight point guards priced higher than Fox on Yahoo!
SG: Cade Cunningham: Cunningham is still very cheap and the Pistons just lost more shooting in Kelly Olynyk and that benefits the other shooters in Detroit. He’s taken 17-plus shots in 3 straight games and he continues to steadily improve his shooting each time out on the floor. Cunningham shot over 44 percent the other night against the Rockets and notched his 1st 20-point outing of his career. Cunningham has grabbed steals in his last three and dished three or more dimes in three of his last four outings. He’s even pulled down 5.4 rebounds per game. We’ve seen Cunningham play 30 or more minutes in his last 3 battles as well. Cunningham has been an excellent lane-driver and he’s even shot 43 percent or better from long-range in his last 2 contests. We have to continue to take advantage of the cheap price point before it balloons up. The Pistons are going to start to mold themselves around Cunningham. He’s the future of the franchise and will be prioritized.
SF: Anthony Edwards: From this year’s No. 1 draft pick to last year’s No. 1 draft pick! Edwards has had a fantastic start to the year and even with D’Angelo Russell fully healthy, Edwards has taken 21 or more shots in each of his last 5 games and scored 27 or more in 3 of his last 4. Edwards has taken the most shots on his team per game by far. He’s been very active on the offensive end and a hound on the defensive end producing multiple swipes in five straight contests. LeBron James being sidelined further benefits the Timberwolves scoring leader. He’s been logging over 36 minutes and grabs 6.3 rebounds per outing. He even gets time to bring up the ball and has proven to be a decent passer. He contributes 3.5 assists per game. It’s a pace-up spot for the Timberwolves and the Lakers continue to struggle mightily on defense. They allow more points per game than every team except for the Hornets and the Grizzlies.
PF: Julius Randle: The Hornets are really bad at defending the post and if the Knicks don’t line up Randle in the post play after play than they’ve completely misread the matchup. It doesn’t matter if it’s Mason Plumlee or Miles Bridges, Randle will have his way in the post and with the Knicks still a little banged up down low, Randle will shift to center at times as well. The pace works heavily in the Knicks favor and Randle has taken 22 or more shots in 2 of his last 4 outings. He’s blocked a shot per game and has even grabbed steals in three of his last five outings. Randle has pulled down 12-plus rebounds in 3 of his last 5 games and because he’s double-teamed a lot and has to pass off, it has helped him on the assist front as well. He produces 5.2 dimes per battle. He’s hit the 30-point mark in scoring 3 times in his last 10 outings as well. He’s over 10k on DraftKings, but still worth spending up because of how weak the Charlotte interior truly is.
C: Jarrett Allen: The Cavs are down a lot of weapons and they’ll have to continue to rely on their big men to produce a lot of their points and Allen has taken double-digit shots in four of his last five games. He’s posted five straight double-doubles and he’s blocked one shot per contest this season. During that five game span he grabbed 15 or more rebounds in four of those games. It’s a minor pace boost for the Cavs and the Pistons are bottom six in the league at defending centers and Jerami Grant and Isaiah Stewart will have a tough time containing both Allen and Evan Mobley in the post. Allen has even dished four dimes in three of his last four outings, but for now, view that as an added bonus. Allen has had to log heavy minutes and he’s played 34-plus in his last 5 contests. The Cavs are still without Kevin Love and Lauri Markkanen and now with Collin Sexton on the shelf, it could only benefit Allen.
