MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks September 1

Justin Verlander, Houston Astros – LOWER than 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

Fading the New York Yankees offense has been a pretty profitable strategy lately and we’ll gladly do it again tonight with Justin Verlander on the mound. The Yankees have particularly struggled against right-handed pitching with a .278 wOBA, .184 batting average, and 29.4% strikeout rate vs righties over the past two weeks. Opposing pitchers are having regular success against New York right now and Verlander should keep it going. The veteran right-hander boasts a 2.79 ERA and 3.30 FIP over his past five starts since joining the Houston Astros at the trade deadline. Outside of one rough outing on the road in Miami, Verlander has been very good for the Astros. Going back to his days with the New York Mets, he’s also been under 2.5 earned runs in nine of his past 12 starts with a 2.02 ERA in this stretch. Plus, Verlander benefits from being at home here, where he has a 2.27 ERA (compared to a 4.02 road ERA). He’s actually faced the Yankees three times already this season and allowed fewer than 2.5 earned runs in all three.

Kodai Senga, New York Mets – LOWER than 4.5 Hits Allowed

A matchup against the Seattle Mariners might be one of the scariest things in baseball right now. This team is hot and the offense is anchoring the AL Wild Card push. Still, we’re backing Kodai Senga to limit the damage at home tonight. The New York Mets pitcher boasts some excellent home numbers with a 2.64 ERA, 3.18 FIP, .184 batting average against, and 30.4% strikeout rate at Citi Field this season. He also comes in pitching well with a 2.66 FIP in the month of August. Senga has allowed fewer than 4.5 hits in four of his last five home starts and in seven of his past nine outings overall. The right-hander continues to keep opposing hitters off-balance and uncomfortable at the plate with his ghost forkball and filthy stuff. Yes, the Mariners are hitting well with a .282 BA vs righties over the past week. Still, going on the road to face Senga has been tough for nearly every team this year.
