MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 9

Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Angels – OVER 7.5 Strikeouts

Welcome to Shohei Ohtani day! As the rumors swirl about where the current Los Angeles Angels two-way star will play after the MLB trade deadline or following free agency, we get to watch Ohtani pitch tonight. He comes in with a strong 2.54 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and 59 strikeouts across 39 innings so far this season. Ohtani has gone over 7.5 strikeouts in five of seven starts, including three straight outings. This matchup against the Houston Astros seems tough at first glance, but multiple trends and stats are pointing to Ohtani having success on the mound here. Over his career, Ohtani has usually dominated at home with a 2.04 ERA in Los Angeles compared to a 4.01 ERA on the road. As for the Astros, they hit left-handed pitchers a lot better than righties. Houston has a 23.8% K rate (12th-highest), .291 wOBA (6th-worst), and 7.6% walk rate (6th-worst) vs right-handers this year. Over the past two weeks vs. righties, those numbers are slightly worse: 24.4% K rate, .248 wOBA, and 5.4% walk rate. Last season, Ohtani boasted a 1.21 ERA and 13.7 K/9 rate in five starts against the Astros. Bank on him continuing to mow down the Houston lineup tonight.

Salvador Perez, Kansas City Royals – OVER 8.5 Fantasy Points

As always, we shouldn’t just blindly follow MLB BvP numbers when they are in either the hitter's or pitcher’s favor. However, Salvador Perez is hot at the plate right now and his career advantage over Lucas Giolito is impossible to ignore. Perez is batting .419 (13-for-31) with four home runs, three doubles, and a 1.322 OPS against the Chicago White Sox pitcher. This sample size is big enough to know that the veteran Perez simply has his division rival’s number when the two go head-to-head. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals catcher is hitting .385 with four homers, 10 runs scored, and seven RBI over the past seven games. He’s also batting .364 with a 1.112 OPS over the past 15 contests. Perez is streaking and now he gets a matchup against a pitcher with whom he’s had plenty of success. The only downside to this prop is the chance of rain and storms in the Kansas City area, so keep an eye on the MLB weather report
