MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 8

Mitch Keller, Pittsburgh Pirates – OVER 5.5 Strikeouts

This strikeout prop for Mitch Keller seems a tad too low based on his performance this season and the matchup. Keller has at least seven strikeouts in five of seven starts so far and he boasts a strong 27.9% strikeout rate. He also had five K’s in another outing. The only time he’s been well below this line was against a St. Louis Cardinals lineup that has one of the lowest K rates in the MLB. Tonight, the Pittsburgh Pirates starter will face a Colorado Rockies offense that has a 25.8% strikeout rate on the road (4th-highest). The Rockies also have just a .289 wOBA and .228 BA away from home this season. Keller should get to at least six strikeouts tonight, considering he’s done it against some tougher lineups like the Rays, Astros, Red Sox, and Dodgers. 

Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks – OVER 6.5 Strikeouts

Everyone likes a good revenge game narrative, right?! Zac Gallen should be amped to put on a show tonight against his former team, the Miami Marlins, and we’ll gladly back his strikeout prop. Gallen is dealing this season with a nasty 35.2% strikeout rate, .199 batting average against, 0.84 WHIP, and a 12.02 K/9 rate. His 2.53 ERA is impressive and a 1.71 FIP suggests some more stud performances are coming. The Arizona Diamondbacks ace has gone over 6.5 strikeouts in five of seven starts this season with double-digit Ks in all three home outings so far. Gallen actually faced the Marlins back in mid-April in Miami and notched seven strikeouts. In this rematch at home, though, we’re banking on even more K’s. Gallen boasts a strong 2.76 ERA and a 10.5 K/9 rate in his career at Chase Field in Arizona. Meanwhile, the Marlins have a 24.4% K rate vs. right-handed pitching (8th-highest in MLB) to go along with a 7.0% walk rate and .286 wOBA (both 4th-lowest). Over the past two weeks, the Miami offense has a 24.8% K rate, 5.6% walk rate, and .257 wOBA against righties.
