MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 31

Pete Alonso, New York Mets – OVER 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI

After going 0-for-4 last night, Pete Alonso is poised to have a much better night at the plate on Wednesday – for multiple reasons. First off, Alonso has some fantastic BvP numbers against Philadelphia Phillies starter Aaron Nola. In the NL East rivals’ careers, Alonso is hitting .349 (15-for-43) with five home runs and three doubles off of Nola. That sample size is huge compared to most BvP data sets and we’re seeing proven production from the Mets first baseman. Alonso also seems due for another home run this week. Since May 16th, he’s smacked seven homers over the past 13 games and hasn’t gone more than two games in between dingers. Considering Alonso has some homer success against Nola, there’s a decent chance of it happening tonight. Even so, we just need him to go over 1.5 combined hits+runs+RBI. Alonso has been over this prop in nine of the past 14 games.

Hunter Brown, Houston Astros – OVER 7.0 Strikeouts

Getting to eight strikeouts or more is a tough ask for any starting pitcher, but Hunter Brown gets a very favorable matchup tonight. The Minnesota Twins have a 26.3% strikeout rate vs. right-handed pitching this season, tied with the lowly Oakland Athletics for the worst in the MLB. Over the past two weeks, the Twins have a league-worst 31.8% K rate vs. righties. In the first two games of this series against the Houston Astros, we’ve seen J.P. France tally eight K’s and Brandon Bielak notch six punchouts. Brown is a much better strikeout pitcher than both of those right-handers. The Astros’ young righty has a 28.1% K rate this season with a 10.3 K/9 ratio. He’s struck out eight or more in three straight outings coming into tonight and has at least seven K’s in six of 10 starts this year.
