MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 3

Nick Pivetta, Boston Red Sox – UNDER 5.0 Strikeouts

The first two games of this Boston-Toronto series have featured 24 total runs and at least 11 scored in each contest. Every starting pitcher has gotten beat up, so we’ll hope the trend continues for Nick Pivetta tonight. The Boston Red Sox starter has limped to a 5.11 ERA and 1.38 WHIP through his first five starts this season. Pivetta has notched 28 strikeouts over 24.2 innings pitched, which is admittedly pretty good. Tonight, though, he’ll face a Toronto Blue Jays offense that boasts a 21.8% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching (9th-best in MLB). Over the past week, the Jays have lowered that K rate vs. righties to 20.6%. Some of the Toronto hitters have good career batting averages against Pivetta, including George Springer (.444) and Bo Bichette (.417) at the top. Pivetta actually has a career 5.83 ERA against the Blue Jays in 11 starts and he has a 5.13 ERA in his career at Fenway Park, despite it being his home stadium for the past two seasons. Pivetta’s strikeouts should be limited in this matchup and he may not last into the sixth inning, which will keep his K total lower as well.

Ramon Urias, Baltimore Orioles – OVER 0.5 Singles

Hat tip to James Grande in the MLB DFS Value Plays article for pointing out Ramon Urias’ favorable matchup tonight. Throughout his career, Urias has hit right-handed pitching well with a .284 BA vs. righties compared to just .231 against left-handers. That’s been very evident this season with Urias hitting .326 against righty arms. The Baltimore Orioles' second baseman comes into tonight’s game hot with a .391 BA and .462 OBP over the past seven games. In terms of this prop to go over 0.5 singles, 14 of his 21 hits this season have been singles. Urias will face Kansas City Royals starter Zack Greinke, who’s struggled to a 6.10 ERA and 1.45 WHIP over six starts so far. Greinke has gotten hit hard this season and is allowing a .292 BA to right-handed hitters like Urias.

Shane McClanahan, Tampa Bay Rays – OVER 1.5 Walks

Let’s go off the wall a bit and target a walks prop for a talented pitcher. Shane McClanahan is off to a hot start with a 5-0 record and a 2.12 ERA across his first six outings. The Tampa Bay Rays pitcher boasts 42 strikeouts over 34 innings pitched thus far while looking dominant on the mound at times. However, the young left-hander also has issued 14 walks in his six starts and has walked multiple hitters in four of his last five outings. His career-high 10.3% walk rate is likely to come down at some point, but the Pittsburgh Pirates present a feisty matchup tonight. The Pirates have an 11.2% walk rate against left-handed pitching this season (3rd-best in MLB) to go along with a low 19% strikeout rate and strong .359 wOBA vs lefties. This Pittsburgh lineup won’t go down easy against McClanahan and should draw at least two walks for this prop to hit. For what it’s worth, this prop is at -130 to the over on DraftKings Sportsbook.
