Without further ado, here are my favorite MLB picks of the day and top MLB player props over on Underdog Fantasy for May 20.

Brandon Belt, Toronto Blue Jays - OVER 0.5 Hits

Is Brandon Belt going to get a hit today? I say yes! He’s hitting .255 with a .189 xBA on the season, but he’s barreling up the ball a good bit, and his average exit velocity is higher than the past two seasons, and would be his second-highest mark since this data started being tracked! Depending on the environment and matchup, there are two different versions of Belt, and the one we get tonight is the best kind of Brandon Belt.

  • Away: .204/.306/.407, 98 wRC+, 51.6 K%
  • Home: .318/.412/.409, 138 wRC+, 21.6 K%
  • Vs. LHP:  .091/.091/.091, -62 wRC+
  • Vs. RHP: .276/.382/.448, 135 wRC

Don’t fret, as tonight’s game is at home and against Grayson Rodriguez, a right-hander who has served up a .328 average and .442 wOBA to left-handed hitters, not to mention a 5.79 ERA on the road this year. Furthermore, Belt is hitting .417 over his last 12 games, and he’s logged a hit in nine of his last 11 starts.

Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers - OVER 1.5 Total Bases

Left-handed hitters have slashed .311/.366/.500 against Miles Mikolas this season and at home this year, Mikolas has been knocked around the yard, to the tune of a 6.53 ERA and .370 BAA. Freeman is 4-for-12 with two home runs in his career against Mikolas, and the star first baseman has a cool .344 average and .932 OPS against righties this season. During Freeman’s nine-game hit streak, not only does he have seven multi-hit games, but he’s slugging .889, and nine of his 16 hits have gone for extra bases.

Braxton Garrett, Miami Marlins - OVER 4.5 Strikeouts

Garrett has the ability to miss bats, and while he has quite a few outings with only a handful of strikeouts, he has four outings with at least five strikeouts this season, and he has 14 strikeouts over his last 10.1 innings pitched. He’s induced double-digit swings-and-misses in his last two starts, and his opponent today has a higher strikeout rate against southpaws than his last two opponents! The Giants have the fourth-highest strikeout rate against southpaws this season, coming in at 26.7 percent, and the sixth-highest strikeout rate (24.7%) at their home park. When we look at the Giants offense at home versus a lefty, the strikeout rate jumps to 28.6 percent! He’s used his slider a bit more in recent starts, and that is his go-to pitch to register that third strike.
