MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 2
Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins – OVER 6.0 Strikeouts
The reigning NL Cy Young winner is off to a slower start than expected this season. Sandy Alcantara has a subpar 5.04 ERA, but there are a few reasons to expect some better starts moving forward. First, his 3.85 FIP and low 51.9% left-on-base rate suggest he’s gotten a bit unlucky at times – and that ERA-FIP differential is one of the highest in the league among qualified starters. Outside of a blow-up outing against the Phillies (9 runs allowed), Alcantara has been better than the ERA indicates.
Even against a dangerous Atlanta Braves offense, tonight presents a nice opportunity for the Miami Marlins right-hander to have a strong strikeout performance. The Braves have a 24.8% strikeout rate vs. righty pitchers this season (9th in MLB) and Alcantara has a 2.48 ERA against Atlanta across 11 career starts. The Marlins starter also pitches better at home with a career 2.46 ERA in Miami vs. a 3.63 ERA on the road. That was evident last year with a 1.64 ERA at home compared to a 3.01 ERA away. The Braves lineup could potentially be without Ronald Acuna Jr., who left yesterday’s game early after getting hit by a pitch. Obviously, his absence upgrades opposing pitchers more. Alcantara just faced Atlanta last start and notched six strikeouts. He also had nine Ks in the previous outing.
Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 8.5 Fantasy Points
Have you heard the good news?! Bryce Harper is officially back in the Philadelphia Phillies lineup today after making a swift recovery from offseason Tommy John surgery. Harper will be the designated hitter for Philly and presumably hitting third in the order for his 2023 debut. Backing a player to perform in his first game back from injury is definitely risky, but some numbers point to Harper coming through.
First, Harper has hit well at Dodger Stadium, with a career .292 batting average and .343 OBP in the ballpark over the years. He went 8-for-12 with seven extra-base hits in a three-game series last year in Los Angeles. It’s not an ideal matchup against Julio Urias, but the Dodgers lefty has struggled at times this season with a 4.41 ERA, 4.76 FIP, and 1.29 WHIP. Interestingly, Harper is 3-for-12 with two home runs off of Urias in their careers. All reports from practice are that Harper has been taking batting practice for some time and hitting against Phillies pitchers in simulated at-bats. Despite not having a minor-league rehab assignment, the MVP-caliber hitter is poised to have a solid night at the plate and prove to everyone that he’s healthy.
