MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 1
Luis Garcia, Houston Astros – OVER 6.5 Strikeouts
We’ve been targeting pitcher strikeout props against the San Francisco Giants all season and we’ll go right back there tonight. The Giants have the highest strikeout rate in the MLB at 27.5%. Against right-handed pitching, the San Fran offense also has a league-worst 26.5% K rate. Over the past week, that number has risen slightly to 27.3% with a lower 5.9% walk rate. Although the Giants have a strong wOBA against right-handed pitching, they’re still striking out a ton. So, even if pitchers give up some hits and a few runs, they also usually strike out plenty. As for Luis Garcia, he’s notched seven or more Ks in three straight starts and he’s done it against some offenses that don’t strike out often vs. righties – the Rangers, Rays, and Blue Jays. The Houston Astros’ starter has a bit more swing-and-miss stuff than last year. He has a career-high 27.2% K rate with a whiff rate and chase rate in the 84th and 88th percentile, respectively. Look for Garcia to rack up seven strikeouts or more in this matchup.
Matt Chapman, Toronto Blue Jays – OVER 1.5 Total Bases
Arguably the hottest hitter over MLB’s first month has been Matt Chapman. The Toronto Blue Jays third baseman is hitting .384, trailing only Luis Arraez for the league’s top batting average, with an MLB-best 1.152 OPS. There was a mid-April lull for Chapman, but he’s back to swinging a hot bat. He’s hitting .458 (11-for-24) over the past seven games with over 1.5 total bases in five of those seven contests, including six extra-base hits. Tonight, Chapman and the Jays offense will get a good matchup against Boston Red Sox starter Corey Kluber. The 37-year-old Kluber has gotten hit hard this season and is rocking a 6.75 ERA and 6.76 FIP through five starts thus far. He’s allowed seven home runs, including at least one in every start, with a career-high 40.8% hard-hit rate and career-low 18.9% strikeout rate. Chapman should have success in this matchup, especially since he’s gone 5-for-6 with two homers and two doubles against Kluber in their careers.
