MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks June 20

Ben Lively, Cincinnati Reds – OVER 5.5 Strikeouts

We’ve backed Ben Lively’s strikeout prop a few times already this season and we’re going right back there tonight in a favorable matchup. The Cincinnati Reds right-hander has 39 strikeouts over his six starts so far for an average of 6.5 K’s per outing. He’s gone over 5.5 K’s in four of six starts as well. Despite punching out just four last time out, Lively has a good opportunity to bounce back against the Colorado Rockies at home here. The Rockies have a 26.3% K rate vs right-handed pitching over the past two weeks, the third-highest in the MLB. Over the past week, that K rate has risen even higher to 30.2% vs righties. Plus, Colorado has one of the worst road offenses in the majors this season with a 25.9% K rate (fourth-highest) and .289 wOBA away from Coors Field. Lively also benefits from the Reds giving him a longer leash to toss close to 100 pitches and go into the sixth or seventh inning regularly.

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers – OVER 1.5 Walks Allowed

When Clayton Kershaw took the mound last week, we targeted his strikeout prop. This time, we’re going in the other direction and looking at his walks. Uncharacteristically, Kershaw has had an issue with walking batters this season. His 6.3% walk rate and 2.3 BB/9 are both his highest since 2012. The Los Angeles Dodgers lefty has issued 21 walks over 14 starts so far and he’s been over 1.5 walks allowed in four of his last five outings. Kershaw’s control issues have especially come to the forefront on the road. He’s gone over 1.5 walks in six of eight road starts while averaging over two walks per road start this season. As for tonight’s matchup, the Los Angeles Angels are a tough lineup to face right now. On the season overall, the Angels have just a league-average 8.7% walk rate vs left-handed pitching. Over the past two weeks, though, they have a 12.5% walk rate against southpaws for the third-best mark in the majors. We should see Kershaw issue at least two free passes based on his road track record and the Angels drawing more walks lately.
