MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks June 2
Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers – OVER 1.5 Total Bases
When we have a hitter as hot as Freddie Freeman is right now, it’s a pretty safe bet to back his player props until he cools off. Freeman is batting .483 over the past seven games and .459 over the past 15 games. That brings his season-long average to .346 with a 1.008 OPS as well. Read those numbers again. The former MVP is simply dominating opposing pitching and not many teams have figured out how to slow him down. Freeman has five multi-hit games in the past six contests and in 14 of the past 20. The Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman has also gone over 1.5 total bases in six straight and in 10 of the past 13 games. Tonight’s matchup vs New York Yankees starter Luis Severino isn’t ideal, but Freeman still has a few splits in his favor. In this stellar season, he’s hitting .368 vs right-handed pitching (.301 vs lefties), .394 at home (.306 on the road), and .368 in night games (.301 in day games).
Merrill Kelly, Arizona Diamondbacks – OVER 5.5 Strikeouts
This strikeout prop seems a tad too low for a guy that’s pitching as well as Merrill Kelly. The Arizona Diamondbacks starter has gone over 5.5 strikeouts in four of his last five outings with nine or more K’s in three of those. Kelly also has six or more punchouts in six of his last nine starts. The right-hander is sporting a strong 2.83 ERA this season with a career-high 27.4% K rate. He’s found more swing-and-miss stuff this year by throwing the four-seam fastball a little less and trusting his offspeed pitches more, resulting in a chase rate that’s in the MLB’s 90th percentile. Kelly is also having more strikeout success at home, with five of his six home starts featuring at least six K’s. He’ll face the Atlanta Braves, who have a 23.3% K rate vs. right-handed pitching this season (13th-highest in MLB). That strikeout rate has stayed the same over the past two weeks, but the Braves are walking just 5.5% of the time in this recent stretch. It’s a decent matchup, but Kelly’s track record is why we’re backing the over.
