MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks June 19

Jose Berrios, Toronto Blue Jays – OVER 4.5 Strikeouts

Admittedly, Jose Berrios hasn’t been the first name to consider when backing strikeout props this season. The Toronto Blue Jays righthander is averaging less than a strikeout per inning with 75 punchouts through 85 innings so far. His 21.7% strikeout rate in 2023 is also slightly below average. However, this 4.5 strikeout prop is a touch too low based on his track record this season. Berrios has gone over 4.5 K’s in 10 of 14 starts this season, including six of his last eight outings. Despite some lower strikeout tendencies, Berrios is still averaging 5.4 K’s per start. Tonight’s matchup is about average in terms of strikeouts as the Miami Marlins have a 22.4% K rate vs right-handed pitching this year. A silver lining would be the Marlins’ bottom-10 numbers vs righties over the past week. The lineup has just a .295 wOBA and a .215 BA in this span.

Corbin Burnes, Milwaukee Brewers – UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts

At first glance, this strikeout line may seem low for a guy like Corbin Burnes. Granted, Burnes has gone over 6.5 K’s in four straight starts and six of his last seven outings. Yet, we’re still taking the under for the Milwaukee Brewers righthander tonight. Why? First off, this matchup vs the Arizona Diamondbacks is very tough on paper. The D-backs have just a 19.4% K rate vs right-handed pitching this season, the third-lowest mark in the majors. Arizona also boasts a strong .338 wOBA and .264 BA vs righties, both top-five. Over the past two weeks, those numbers are even better against righty arms: 18.2% K rate, .378 wOBA, .294 BA – not to mention a 10.2% walk rate. Strikeouts should be tough to come by for Burnes tonight. As for the Brewers’ starter, his 24.3% K rate is a tad worrisome as it’s the lowest since his rookie year and a notable decrease from 30.5% last season and 35.6% in his 2021 Cy Young campaign. He hasn’t been as dominant as in years past with a 3.44 ERA and 4.14 FIP. Yes, Burnes struck out eight against the Diamondbacks back in April, but the lineup is much more dangerous now than it was at the beginning of the season. Finally, Burnes is averaging just 5.9 K’s per start this year and has gone under in half of his 14 outings.
