MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks June 15

Sonny Gray, Minnesota Twins – OVER 6.5 Strikeouts

Sonny Gray is putting together an impressive season with a 2.25 ERA so far for the Minnesota Twins. Let’s bank on another strong outing tonight against the Detroit Tigers. Not only is Gray’s ERA outstanding, but his 2.43 FIP is promising as well. In terms of strikeouts, the Twins’ righthander has 76 punchouts over 72 innings. Admittedly, he’s been very up-and-down game-to-game when it comes to K’s. Still, we like targeting Gray at home, where he’s sporting a 1.71 ERA and a 50:9 K:BB ratio over seven starts and 42 innings. Compare that to his 3.00 ERA and 26:17 K:BB ratio in six road starts across 30 innings. Gray has gone over 6.5 K’s in four of seven home outings and struck out six in another. Tonight, he faces a Detroit lineup that’s been terrible vs righties all season. The Tigers have a 24.4% K rate vs right-handed pitching this season (6th-worst in MLB). Over the past two weeks, Detroit’s strikeout rate against righties is at 27.8% (2nd-worst).

Marcus Stroman, Chicago Cubs – UNDER 5.5 Strikeouts

Striking out six or more batters in a game isn’t a tall task for pitchers these days, but we’re still backing the under here for Marcus Stroman. The Chicago Cubs righthander has been under 5.5 K’s in eight of his last 11 starts, including four of the past six. Stroman was never a huge strikeout pitcher and that’s the same this year with below-average K and whiff rates. Tonight, he’ll face a Pittsburgh Pirates lineup with a 22.7% K rate vs righties this season, which is right about the league average. The Pirates have been actually tougher on righties over the past week with a lower 19.7% K rate. The other key thing is that this Pittsburgh offense draws a good amount of walks vs right-handed pitchers with a 9.6% BB rate this year (6th-best in MLB) and 9.9% over the past week (10th-best). That’s an issue for Stroman, who has a career-worst 9.2% walk rate himself this season. The other big factor is that the wind is blowing in at Wrigley Field tonight. This should force the Pirates hitters to put the ball on the ground more while trying to draw more walks, instead of swinging for the fences and subsequently raising the strikeout tendency.
