MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks June 13
Alex Cobb, San Francisco Giants – OVER 5.0 Strikeouts
When you think of strikeout pitchers, Alex Cobb’s name doesn’t exactly jump to mind. However, this K prop is a tad too low when you look at his game logs. Cobb has struck out five or more in nine of 13 starts this season, including four straight outings coming into tonight. Again, the San Francisco Giants righthander isn’t a big swing-and-miss guy but getting to at least five punchouts hasn’t been a tall task for him all year. As for tonight’s matchup, the St. Louis Cardinals are actually tough on righties. The Cards have a 21.0% K rate vs. right-handed pitching this season (7th-best in MLB) with a .327 wOBA. An interesting trend, though, is they aren’t walking a ton against righties. The Cardinals offense has just a 6.5% walk rate vs. righties over the past two weeks and 6.1% over the past week. Meanwhile, Cobb has a 6.0% walk rate himself this season and is sporting a 3.01 ERA so far. It’s worth noting that the over 4.5 strikeouts for Cobb is juiced to -165 on DraftKings Sportsbook as of this writing.
Jordan Lyles, Kansas City Royals – UNDER 4.5 Strikeouts
In case you haven’t noticed, Jordan Lyles has been pretty awful this season. The Kansas City Royals righthander is rocking a 6.84 ERA over 13 starts while getting hit hard almost every time out. Let’s bank on another shaky start tonight and target the under for his strikeout prop. Lyles has been under 4.5 K’s in eight of 13 starts this season, including four of the past seven. Tonight, he gets an under-the-radar tough matchup against the Cincinnati Reds. Ever since Elly De La Cruz has joined the lineup over the past week, the Reds have been much better offensively. Over the past week, Cincy’s K rate vs. righty pitching is at just 17.2% (4th-best in MLB) with a strong .369 wOBA and .308 BA. Those numbers are notably improved on the Reds’ season-long splits vs. righties: 23.1% K rate, .318 wOBA, .251 BA. Look for Cincinnati to pounce on Lyles here as the offense is averaging 5.4 runs per game with De La Cruz in the majors.
