MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks July 7
Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 6.5 Strikeouts
At first glance, this strikeout line may seem high for Zack Wheeler on the road in just an average matchup. His 4.03 ERA this season isn’t spectacular and he’s only gone over 6.5 strikeouts in nine of 17 starts so far. Still, there are reasons for optimism for a good outing and high-K performance from Wheeler tonight. First, the Philadelphia Phillies right-hander is due for positive regression according to his 2.82 FIP and 3.39 xERA compared to that current 4.03 ERA. His .326 BABIP and 67% left-on-base rate are also indicators of some bad luck and are worse than his career marks. Despite some shaky outings this season, it’s a good sign that the strikeouts haven’t gone anywhere as he currently sports a 10.3 K/9 rate (second-best of his career) and 26.8% K rate (third-best). Wheeler is trending up in the K department, too, with 7+ K’s in six of his last 10 outings. His opponent, the Miami Marlins, is about league-average against right-handers when it comes to strikeouts this year (21.9%). Still, Wheeler has the stuff to hit the over despite a so-so matchup. Finally, it’s very encouraging to see Wheeler have excellent career numbers against the Marlins (2.37 ERA, 7.1 K/start) and on the road in Miami (2.89 ERA, 6.7 K/start).
Hunter Brown, Houston Astros – OVER 6.0 Strikeouts
We’ve picked on the Seattle Mariners offense for strikeout props all season and we’ll do it again tonight. The Mariners’ 25.7% K rate vs right-handed pitching is the second-worst in the MLB, trailing only the Twins. Over the past week, Seattle’s strikeout rate vs righties is at 27.4% with a low 5.8% walk rate as well. Meanwhile, Hunter Brown has flashed impressive swing-and-miss stuff in his first full season in the bigs. The Houston Astros’ right-hander is rocking a 27.5% K rate himself this year with a 10.2 K/9 ratio. Brown has at least seven strikeouts in nine of 16 starts so far and he has 6+ K’s in seven of his last nine outings. Check out some of his K totals against strikeout-prone opponents similar to Seattle: 8 vs Minnesota, 10 vs Oakland, 9 vs Oakland, and 7 vs Minnesota. The young righty can take advantage of this matchup at home, where he’s averaging exactly six strikeouts per start.
