Domingo German, New York Yankees – UNDER 5.0 Strikeouts

In case you somehow missed it last week, Domingo German threw the 24th perfect game in MLB history in his latest outing. As impressive and rare as that feat was for German, let’s fade him tonight in a much tougher matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. Don’t forget that this is the same pitcher who coughed up 17 combined runs in his previous two starts before tossing that perfecto. There’s a chance German comes crashing back down to Earth, especially when you go from facing a terrible Oakland Athletics offense to a stout division rival. Baltimore’s 22.1% K rate vs right-handed pitchers this season is the 10th-best in the majors. Over the past week vs righties, the Orioles’ strikeout rate is a tad lower at 21.0%. As for German, he had five K’s or fewer in seven of his previous eight starts before he struck out nine in the perfect game. The New York Yankees’ righty averaged only 3.8 K’s per outing in that span. Then we have to factor in the negative regression that is bound to come for any pitcher who just had the best performance of his life. Despite the awesome perfecto, remember that German still has a 4.54 ERA and 4.87 FIP this season. 

Logan Webb, San Francisco Giants – OVER 6.0 Strikeouts

The Seattle Mariners have been a profitable matchup to target for opposing pitchers’ strikeout props, so we’ll do it again tonight. Against right-handed pitching this season, the Mariners’ 25.6% strikeout rate is the MLB’s second-worst. That K rate vs righties is up to 27.7% over the past two weeks (also second-worst). The Seattle offense can be very hit-or-miss (no pun intended) and there are usually a ton of strikeouts up for grabs for the pitchers who can take advantage. Logan Webb can do it tonight with some favorable trends and stats in his favor. The San Francisco Giants right-hander has been strong at home this year with a 2.31 ERA, compared to a 4.24 road ERA. He’s also averaging 6.6 K’s per home start with at least six strikeouts in six of seven outings in San Fran. Webb has at least six K’s in 10 of 17 starts overall this season. Though his strikeouts have been down lately, it’s mostly due to tough matchups. Time for him to exploit the Mariners at home tonight.
